  3. Beginnings (cont’d) • Joined the Bolsheviks • Activities included connecting with workers and inciting strikes • Involved in bank robberies, ransom kidnappings, and extortion to raise money for party

  4. Stalin’s rise to power • Totalitarianism: a government that takes total, centralized, state control over every aspect of public and private life

  5. Police terror • Use terror and violence to force obedience and crush opposition. • Normally, police are expected to respond to criminal activity and protect citizens. In totalitarian state, police serve to enforce central government’s policies • Spying • Intimidation • Great Purge

  7. propaganda • Propaganda: Biased or incomplete information used to sway people to accept certain beliefs or actions. • Control of mass media allows this happen

  8. Religious/ethnic persecution • Create “enemies of the state” to blame for things that go wrong • Target religious/ethnic groups • League of Militant Godless
