  3. 5.02 Submit the questions as usual for this assessment. 1. Define the term "Muckraker." Be sure to include the name of the person who created it. 2. What was the main focus of the Naturalistic writer? 3.How is the Realist/Naturalistic writer different from the Romantic writer? 4.Why would post Civil War, newly industrialized America be attracted to the Realistic movement? (your opinion) 5.What is meant by the term "local color"?

Be sure to include the name of the person who created it. • Muckrakers are Realists who were digging • up the dirt (muck) to show the world really what was happening in the factories. • Theodore Roosevelt came up with • the term and • said muckrakers were journalists • who exposed the • corruption in business and they went • too far. • Why was there corruption? • Tons of immigrants, so they paid low • wages, worked long • long hours, no safety regulations

Realism and Naturalism (types of writing styles) In the late 1800’s there was a HUGE change in the way writers wrote and thought about life. • The Civil War- Hard time on Americans • The growth of railroads-increased travel and availability of goods • The telegraph-Increased communication • Mass immigration-Tons of people from other countries came to America • Rapid industrialization-Factories were built to produce all kinds of things • People moved away from farms and to the cities • Realism- • Truth and accuracy • Writers sentimentally tried to capture the setting before it was lost to modernization.

Characteristics of Realism/Naturalism: A person is simply a person Freedom of choice is limited by outside forces (job, social status, marriage) Truth and Accuracy are key Characteristics of Romanticism: Equal at birth, celebrated the individual Innate goodness and eventual perfectibility People were encouraged toward self-development Belief in supernatural

  9. Local Color/Regionalism • Came about because of industrial revolution • Loss of local folkways and traditions • Customs, dialect, clothing, characters, history, topography • Often has feelings of nostalgia • 5.What is meant by the term "local color"?
