  1. WELCOME TO DELTA’S ‘Guide to Perplexed Parents’ HELP! I am Confused. PROs keep coming to my house But I have no good way to make the best decision for my child

  2. OOPS SORRY

  3. SO MUCH ABOUT US WHAT ABOUT OTHER COLLEGES? • Corporate Colleges AND NON-CORPORATE COLLLEGES

  4. Corporate culture • Batch Promised Means? • Student becomes just one among a lakh students • Campus promise Means? • Scholarship Promise Means? • Multiple Anonymous Teachers • Teachers not in charge • Exams prepared by non teaching faculty

  5. Myth No.1 If they Pamper you before admission, they will take good care later. People come to your house to ‘recruit’ you. Have you wondered, Why?

  6. The relationship between parents and teachers should be one of equals.

  7. If someone is paying undue or unseemly respect to you, then they are expecting to gain a lot more than you from a future relationship.

  8. Ask, what is the price they expect to extract from me or cost expected to be inflicted upon me for all this desperate recruitment?

  9. Not just you but your child has to pay that price with his future career and life.

  10. Batches Promised • One year’s best batch becomes A normal batch next year to mass recruit O2 becomes CO2!

  11. Rather than Standing out like Churchill and Nehru

  12. You are an Anonymous Student • Picture of a kolkota crowded street

  13. Reality: You are likely to be Shifted from One Branch to Another

  14. Myth No. 2:Corporates provide good & steady teaching Reality: Teachers won’t matter; Only Material that you are expected to mug up or do problems from. Your local teacher will be no good at a JEE level and is basically a dressed up ‘EAMCET’ teacher. Perhaps they may fly in an expert teacher once a month on a topic but you have no access to him before or after, for doubts.

  15. Anonymous Teachers Going Through a Revolving Door • Picture of a revolving Door • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeafsydZaV4

  16. MYTH NO.3 DISCIPLINE MATTERS AT ANY COST • Reality: Teenagers need to respect their guardians and mentors. Else, they turn into rebels. • One needs both a carrot and a stick to motivate. • Intelligent children need even more subtle handling.

  17. Teachers not in Charge

  18. Myth No.4: Labs and LabWork Don’t matter • Science is empirical in nature. • Science developed in labs. • Engineering is applied science. • Engineering is practical problem solving.

  19. Many Corporate Colleges don’t even do the experiments prescribed in the BIE syllabus but We use experiments even while teaching and Students perform all experiments by themselves over two months.

  20. Myth No.5 • Personality and Creativity don’t matter. Only Results do, at the XII standard level. • Junior College is not the end of a journey but the beginning of the end. It is the beginning of a college education.

  21. The so called corporate way tinkers with the personality and the uniqueness of the child. It creates “tension” and raises “suicides”.

  22. Myth No.6: The Top Ranks go to Corporate Colleges • Hundreds of ranks out of 40,000 students is nothing to brag about. • Someone in another branch getting a rank is like being happy that Abhishek Bacchan got married to Aiswarya Rai when you cannot get a wife. • If you collect the 1,000 best students, 100 of them are bound to be in the top 1000. But what happens to the other 900?

  23. This unscientific way succeeds in securing a poor rank or no rank for a very good student and spoils an average student once and for all.

  24. MYTH NO.7: Standardized Exams make Corporate Culture Better idea. • It is best for an expert teacher who teaches a class to set assignments and tests. • Design and Shop Floor Engineers can be separated but • ‘testing experts’ in the HQ and no-good teachers in the classroom is a bad idea.

  25. Exams not written by your teacher? Portion not yet covered? Confused?

  26. Reality: Students or Teachers have no input • MYTH NO.8: National Corporate Institutes are better as they have standardized teaching

  27. Chapter completed whether you understand or not

  28. Myth No.9 • It does not matter in which city and which branch of a corporate college you study in, as their teaching and exams are standardized. • To a poor Bihari villager under Laloo’s care, it does not help if he hears that Ambani has become rich in distant Gujarat! • So location does matter very much!

  29. Reality Location matters very much. The vast majority of branches see barely or no success as anyone with a half decent chance is pushed to their best branch. (A Vast majority of the students in other branches receive intermediate or EAMCET training under the banner ‘IIT-JEE’. Verify this from seniors at the corporate branch you propose to join, before you admit your child.

  30. Other Choices • Too Many Cooks Spoil the Broth • Emperor has no clothes • If not IIT, What happens to me? • Without an intermediate college, do I have an education? • Tuition is subtraction by addition

  31. MYTH NO.10 • Old Ranks Matter when the Faculty in that institute from its glory days Retire and Student Quality deteriorates.

  32. Emperor has no clothes

  33. MYTH NO.11 • TRACK SYSTEM OF MULTIPLE TEACHERS TEACHING VARIOUS TOPICS IN THE SAME SUBJECT S SIMULTANEOUSLY IS EFFICIENT. • Track system is like 4 blind people trying to describe the elephant

  34. MYTH NO.12 Tuition Helps Tuition is ACTUALLY subtraction by addition. 1 + (-2)= -1

  35. Too Many Cooks Spoil the Broth

  36. TEACHERS ARE DIME A DOZEN BUT GOOD TEACHERS ARE ONE IN A MILLION

  37. MYTH No.13 JEE (or bust) at any cost is the best policy • A Safety Net is needed for everyone as even the best student may perform poorly on that day due to health or psychological reasons.

  38. If not IIT, What happens to me?

  39. Myth No.14: College does not matter; only the JEE. • Developing a habit of looking down on intermedate classes, bunking classes and sleeping during the day leads you into bad habits that get you into serious trouble in IIT and in life beyond.

  40. Without an intermediate college, can I really receive an education?

  41. Myth No. 15: Any Hostel is good enough • You need a safe hostel conducive to studies, healthy living, good friendships and providing access to lecturers.

  42. MYTH No.16: Even A thug can conduct study hours STUDY HOURS should be monitored by lecturers as many children develop ‘escape habits’ by pretending.

  43. “IN THE REAL WORLD THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ALGEBRA!”

  44. Myth No. 17: An unfriendly, Stern place fosters good Ranks Reality: A serious but friendly-family Atmosphere is key to sustainable effort

  45. MYTH No.18: One should study 12 hours daily without a Break Reality: One needs training to concentrate over long hours and to remain healthy. Yoga, meditation etc., help a lot.

  46. Thank You for Visiting • Hope the food for thought was sumptuous and the thirst for knowledge was kindled!
