  1. Marianist Family Retreat CenterCape May Point, NJMSJC Steering Committee – Annual Meeting, Jan. 15-19 2009

  2. South Shore Beauty

  3. Marianist Retreat Center • Marianist House and St. Peter’s Church

  4. Beautiful Buildings • St. Mary’s by the Sea and local bed & breakfast

  5. We came from 10 states - from New Jersey to Hawaii - arriving at the Marianist Family Retreat Center on a cold, windy day. Our goal: to review the work completed in 2008, and to plan for 2009. • Beautiful artwork greets us!

  6. Our inspiration - group prayer prepared by Brenda Fitzpatrick, Grace Walle, Errol Christian, and Ted Gorczyca. Bill Farrell helped us remember the life of Sr. Laola Hironaka FMI, an early leader in MSJC. • Brenda, Errol, Ted, and Grace

  7. The big question: How may we continue to help the Marianist Family integrate the works of justice into the life and work of each member?

  8. Justice is the child of love and compassion, and so we met in a friendly spirit, respectful of differing opinions, attentive to the Spirit moving within us and within the Marianist family. Al, Ted, Joanne, Leanne, Mike, Grace, guests

  9. We accomplished . . . • We laughed, prayed, relaxed, talked and planned. • We renewed our commitment of service to the Marianist Social Justice Collaborative in 2009. • We look forward to advances in racial and immigrant justice, alternatives to violence, the end of the death penalty, global economic justice, environmental justice, the Adele Social Justice Project, a place for everyone at the Marianist table, and cultural awareness and sensitivity. • We affirmed development of a model for dialogue on the Consistent Ethic of Life. • We look forward to the MLNNA Continental Assembly in 2010, with its theme of Ke Aloha, Ka Pono, and Ka’Ohana (commitment, balance, and family).

  10. Our Faith Circle:from Hawaii to New Jersey

  11. From Guatemala to San Antonio

  12. We welcomed 3 new members, and welcomed MEEC (Marianist Environmental Education Center) as an ex officio member. • Tara Poling (MEEC), Jessica Merugu, Julie Nagasako, Errol Christian

  13. We affirmed the leadership of Brenda Fitzpatrick for the next three years, and thanked Ted Cassidy for his chairmanship over the past six years

  14. We thanked Jim Vogt for his attention to our many projects.

  15. Many of us had never been to the South Jersey shore, but we managed chilly walks to the beach with its light house, and excursions into Cape May.

  16. We enjoyed meeting with key staff at the Marianist Retreat Center, the members of South Jersey Hope, and Cape May area residents - justice “on the ground and at the scene,” - connections forged by the Marianists over the years.

  17. We were also challenged and energized in a half-day workshop over faith-based community organizing led by Joe Fleming from PICO (People Improving Communities through Organizing.)

  18. Steering Committee Top left to bottom: Al Prendergast, Larry Hufford Julia Nagasako, Grace Walle, Ann Rene McConn (Staff), Bill Farrell, Leanne Jablonski, Cynthia Sias, Brenda Fitzpatrick, Jessica Merugu, Tara Poling (MEEC), Ted Gorczyca, Myles McCabe, Ted Cassidy, Bob Donovan, Mike Gillespie, Errol Christian, Jim Vogt (Staff)

  19. Placing all in the care of Mary … • We did the dishes and cleaned up the house; we enjoyed a Sunday brunch and a simple and beautiful Eucharistic liturgy, prepared by Ted Cassidy, Leanne Jablonski, and Jessica Merugu. • Then we returned home, whether 50 or 3500 miles away, but all of us closer in spirit. We invite each of you to join us in the Marianist Social Justice Collaborative. And we ask for your prayers.
