  1. Atlantic Union CollegeThe new paradigmRight-sizing with a focus on Nursing, Premedical & Health Studies, Adult Degree Program, Education & Psycology, Religion & TheologyThe Ellen White Model Body Mind Soul with Revenue Suggestions by Dr. Dormer October 4, 2007

  2. Current Strength Build upon the success of the Nursing and the School of Science and Technology. The model will also include the Adult Degree program, Education and Religion/Theology department. Basic Concept The new AUC will concentrate on the health, science and wellness which are based on the Adventist health message; the Adventist theme of helping those that are sick based on the example that Jesus gave to us, and the Adventist ideas of wellness. Also, it will focus of the parable that Jesus mentions about wealth creation in the story of the talents. Target market All students that are interested in having a health profession in the field of nursing, medicine, medical research, and adults that have family and work obligations and desire to return to school. Also, the education department will be retained. Even though they will teach general education classes their focus will be trained health education and science teachers. It is important to recognize that God is our center so the Theology department will be retained to add balance for the other disciplines. The Ellen White Model

  3. The Ellen White Model • Examples Current • Nursing, Science and Technology, ADP, Education & Psychology, Religion & Theology To be develop • Chemistry/Biochemistry, Pre-health professional programs, Bioinformatics/Health Informatics, Pharmacology, Biotechnology, MSN and Doctorate in Nursing Advantages • The programs of Nursing and Biology consist of close to 240 students. When you add ADP you get another 60, and with the addition of Theology you can have close to the 400 students that we need to reach our financial goal. • Also, the goal of the school of Science and Technology is to write $5,000,000 worth of grants in 5 years. Therefore, this school will be the most lucrative. • Also, by including the education department we will be including the 4 largest and most successful departments of AUC. • Theology is in essence the most important department on campus. It is important that we train individuals that serve God and receive spiritual guidance from those who will part of that department. Disadvantages • There will be a lost of the school’s liberal art identity.

  4. The Ellen White Model • The school will follow the lucrative model of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. • Founded in 1823, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is a private, coeducational college offering graduate, professional and undergraduate degrees in the health sciences. • With campuses in Boston and Worcester, Massachusetts and Manchester, New Hampshire, the College enrolls approximately 3,200 students, who are drawn from 35 states and 34 foreign countries, and employs over 300 faculty and staff.

  5. The Ellen White ModelImportant notes • We will take just a small part of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences program and adapt it to our needs. • Why? a. We need revenue. b. There are no tuition-only school ranked as a top school within the United States. c. Great schools have strong research foundations. d. Combining great teaching with great research makes a great school not just a school that survives.

  6. The Ellen WhiteModel • What are the parts of the Massachusetts we will adopt? • How they run their Nursing Department • How they run there PreMed and Health Studies Department * The above will be considered the core of the school with the department of education and psychology, theology/religion and playing an important role in maintaining educational balance.

  7. Responding to the growing national demand for registered nurses who are educated, the AUC School of Nursing will develop several innovative program that will begin with Nurse’s Aids, LPN, RN, BSN, and possibly in the future MSN and Doctorial level classes. Because of this projected growth the Nursing department will move to what is now the Music Building. This will give this department more room to grow, develop, and conduct research. The desire is to have at least 8 full time and 11 adjunct professors. The Ellen WhiteModelNursing

  8. The Premedical and Health Studies major appeals to students seeking focused undergraduate preparation for various professional and graduate programs in health care. This academic major includes three distinctive and helpful features to students aspiring to be health care practitioners: An interdisciplinary health studies curriculum that balances the basic and laboratory sciences with a range of liberal arts courses. A seminar that introduces students to the full spectrum of professional possibilities in health care. A number of different professional pathways that facilitate entry into specific professional and graduate programs at partner universities around the country THE FOCUS OF THE DEPARTMENT WILL BE BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH AND TRAINING. School of Premedical and Health Studeies Programs AS in pre-health careers that will be completed at Loma Linda University, Andrews University or other schools. (Started by Dr. Brown) BS in Chemistry/MS in Pharmaceutical Chemistry BS in Environmental Science BS in Health Psychology in conjunction with the Education Department BS in Biology BS in Bioinformatics BS in Health Informatics BS in Pharmacology BS in Biotechnology BS in Biochemistry BS Premedical and Health Studies with preparation for: Master of Physician Assistant Studies Doctor of Optometry Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Doctor of Physical Therapy Doctor of Podiatric Medicine Doctor of Medicine Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine The Ellen White ModelPremedical and Health Studies The desire to have 3 biologist, 1 chemist, 1 biochemist and two full time lab assistance

DOBI will hire it own employees.

  10. Philosophy The mission of the School of Education is to serve an international clientele, preparing educators for excellence in thinking, teaching, service, and research. As companions in learning, students and faculty are committed to global Christian service. A person who loves learning and applies knowledge and theory to the practice of education. A person who applies principles of a Christian world view to his/her profession. A person who serves effectively in social relationships with global, equitable sensitivity and skill. A person who is aware of the importance of healthful living practices. A person who effectively leads others toward fulfillment of their God-given potential. A person who believe in teaching other about health, science, wellness with care and compassion. They will offer programs in the following areas of study: Liberal Arts Early Childhood Track Elementary Education Track Paraeducation Philosophy Psychology Teacher Education in Early Childhood Elementary Secondary Master of Education Health Education Teacher Education with an emphasis in the science at the levels of Elementary Middle School High School The Ellen White ModelEducation They would desire to have 4 full time and 1 part time professor. All others would be adjunct depending on need.

  11. The Adult Degree Program (ADP) at Atlantic Union College is based on two beliefs held by the college faculty: that many adults whose college work has been interrupted by marriage, work, military service, or other personal circumstances should have the opportunity of completing their degrees, and that there are many ways of doing reputable academic work other than being enrolled in on-campus courses. This uniquely designed program successfully combines both on campus and at home study. Classes that will be offered will concentrate in the health field and science education. A Teacher licensure program will be developed that relates to science, math, and special needs. - They are the three main area of teacher shortages in the public schools. The Adult Degree Program of Atlantic Union College is one of the few colleges in the United States that offers teacher licensure through an adult distant learning program, offering adults the opportunity to continue working while earning their baccalaureate or post graduate licensure requirements. Master of Education - M.Ed. Concentration in School Administration - M.Ed. Concentration in curriculum and Instruction The Ellen White Model ADP This program will employ three full time professors. The others teachers will be adjuncts.

  12. The Department of Religion has a dual function. It serves the general student in the areas of spiritual development and introduction to theological studies from the Adventist perspective. It includes the following programs: Bachelor of Arts in Religion Bachelor of Arts in Theology, Bachelor of Science Certificate in Evangelism and minors in Religion and Biblical Languages. This department will continue to offer programs: Biblical Languages Evangelism Personal Ministries Religion Theology MS in Medical Chaplaincy It is important that AUC maintains it spiritual focus even as we encounter success in implementing a paradigm shift that will bring the school wealth and security. The Ellen White Model Religion/Theology This department will continue to have its current amount of teachers.

  13. The Ellen White Model AUC Grant Writing Committe • AUC will move away from just being a teaching college to becoming a teaching and research college. • AUC will become a leader in nursing, science, educational, and even theological research. • The current full time staff of the Nursing, Science, Education, ADP, and Theology will be retained with the hope of hiring more staff for those departments in the upcoming school year. • The AUC grant writing committee will assist the faculty in promoting their careers and providing student learning opportunities. • Grant writing and publishing would not become a burden, but a professional growth opportunity for the faculty.

  14. The Ellen White Model AUC Grant Writing Committe • Faculty will be given a new mandate: All faculty members must publish and write grants in order to be promoted. • For an instructor to become a assistant professor they must publish 1 peer reviewed non-Adventist article and have one funded grant where they are the principle investigation while they are an instructor. • For an assistant professor to become an associated professor they must publish 1 peer reviewed non-Adventist article and have one funded grant where they are the principle investigation while they are an associated professor. • For an associate professor to become a professor they must publish 1 peer reviewed non-Adventist article and have one funded grant where they are the principle investigation while they where an associated professor. • For an professor to have tenure they must publish 1 peer reviewed non-Adventist article and have one funded grant where they are the principle investigation while they where a professor. * The grant writing committee will help and assistant all faculty members. This is what is asked of professors at many of the top colleges and universities in the US.

  15. The Ellen White AUC Grant Writing CommitteeWhy this mandate? • Out of all the top 100 schools in America none of them are tuition only. • You cannot go from good to great without have a revenue stream that is not dependant on tuition. • The more money a school attracts with grants the more (quality) students that will have.

  16. The Ellen White ModelNear term goals begin school year 2008 - 2009 • To have a staff of 50 to 60 individuals (25 full time teachers). • To have at least 300 students (one dorm will be closed). • To be in the black financially in 2008. • To have written at least $1,000,000 worth of grants by December 2008 • To have the faculty work with Dr. Henry-Saturne to increase enrollment by 50 students each year starting 2008

  17. The Ellen White Model In conclusion • Why is this plan possibly the most workable. • Because they are millions of dollar available to assist schools like ours. • Because we have hard working faculty that can understand what success is and that success comes from hard work. • Because AUC realize that the tuition only model is dead and will not sustain us even in our new paradigm if there is not an additional funding streams outside of tuition. • Finally, because God wants his people to be on top and not at the bottom or even just surviving.

  18. Thank you and God blessThe End
