  1. 8th grade Health UnitMuscles and Skeletal Systems

  2. Bell RingerPick up and complete the Saved by the skeleton worksheet. Front and back

  3. Skeletal system- an internal system made up of bones, joints, and connective tissue • There are 206 bones in the body. • What the skeletal system does for you: • Supports your body • Allows movement • Protects soft tissue •   Forms blood cells

  4. Connective tissue: • Cartilage- strong, flexible tissue that cushions joints ex. knee

  5. Ligaments-connect bones to bones ex. Acl Tendon-connect muscle to bones ex. Achilles

  6. How muscles Work • Two basic actions account for all muscle movement. • Extension- the lengthening of muscle fibers and contraction- is the shortening of muscle fibers.

  7. Cranium Mandible Clavicle Scapula Humerus Ribs Vertebrae Radius Ulna Pelvis Phalanges Femur Petella---------- Fibula Tibia Phalanges

  8. Muscular System • The body is composed of over 600 muscles • Muscular System-group of tough tissue that makes your body parts move

  9. 3 Kinds of Muscle: • A.Skeletal-attached to bones that enable you to move (voluntary)

  10. B.Smooth- the muscles found in the organs, blood vessels, and glands (involuntary) • C.Cardiac- found only in the walls of the heart (involuntary)

  11. Voluntary and Involuntary • Voluntary Contraction • Striated muscle that can be controlled voluntarily.... meaning you control the muscles that you want to move... arms legs fingers... ect • Involuntary Contraction • You cannot control the movement. You breathe on your own and your heart beats on its own. Another would be a myospasm meaning a muscle spasm.

  12. Your Muscular System • What is a tendonitis? Sometimes the tendons become inflamed for a variety of reasons, and the action of pulling the muscle becomes irritating. • What is a sprain? Wrench or twist the ligaments of (an ankle, wrist, or other joint) violently • What is a cramp? A painful, involuntary muscle contraction, typically caused by fatigue or strain • What is a spasm? A sudden involuntary muscular contraction or convulsive movement. • A sudden and brief spell of an activity or sensation: "a spasm of coughing What is a hernia? A condition in which part of an organ is displaced and protrudes through the wall of the cavity containing it • What is a dislocation? Injury or disability caused when the normal position of a joint or other part of the body is disturbed

  13. Pectoral Deltoid Biceps Rectusabdominus brachioradialis Sartorius Quadriceps Tibialis

  14. Trapizus Deltiod Latissimusdorsi Triceps Gluteus maximus Hamstring Gastrocnemius Soleus (side of claf muscle)
