  3. Netty Sargent used to live with her uncle…(para.1) Meaning: Netty Sargent lived with her uncle in the past, but then she left. Used to: often did in the past He is not what he used to be. Get used to doing: be accustomed to He got used to getting up early. Sth be used to do: The knife is used to cut the paper.

  4. … in a lonely house…(para.1) Lonely + place 偏僻的 + somebody 孤独的(主观感觉) Alone: 孤独的(客观事实) She was alone, but didn’t feel lonely.

  5. … and though she might have had many better fellows…(para.2) Meaning: though she was so nice that she should have had many better fellows in the past. Might have had: what should do in the past. Model verb + do: sth. may happen now or in the future. Model verb + have done: sth. might happen in the past. Model verb + be doing: sth. may happen at present

  6. Summary: Netty Sargent was a girl who used to live with her uncle. She fell in love with a young man, Jasper Cliff. But the young man loved her uncle’s house more than her. And he told her if she could not get the house, he would not marry her. Unfortunately, when her uncle prepared to sign the document with which she can get the house, the old man was dead. To win a husband, she had to cheat others by using her dead uncle’s hand.
