  1. Intermediate 2 PE Structures and Strategies

  2. The role of the setter • The role of the setter within the game is to set up all attacks • This involves getting into position when the 1st ball or pass has been played and setting the ball up for the attack • A secondary role of the setter is top cover and defend attacks and then set again • As the setter you control the attacks dictating who will attack where the attack takes place and when the attack takes place.

  3. Tasks of the Setter • Find the successful attacker • Attack the weak blockers • Use speed of attack to pressurise the opposition • Use height in set to allow for team attack • Recognise opposition weaknesses and strengths

  4. Qualities required • Technical • Good timing, control and dynamic balance when volleying the ball • Able to gauge the flight path of the ball • High accurate volleyer of the ballm both forwards and reverse • Can vary the height and pace of the set to change the tempo of the attack

  5. Tactical • Setter dictates the pace of the game (play makers) • Control who, where and when the attacks take place • Where is the strongest hitter? • Where is the weakest blocker? • Where is the least agile or smallest blocker? • Where is the space on the court? • Is 2nd touch attack an option?

  6. Physical • Speed for quick movements into set position and then to defend • Mobility - agile to respond to many positions on court and turn quickly • Endurance - repeat setting and defensive action again and again

  7. Specialised Setter? The role of the specialised setter is to set up all attacks in the game. This involves getting into position every time the 1st touch or pass has been made. This frees other players to attack. The specialised setter will have certain strengths: • The most accurate volleyers of the ball • The player who can control the flight of the ball • The player also has a feel for the height and distance in a set • More adept at reverse volley

  8. Why would you play this strategy?
