  1. Being A Part Of HIS CHURCHMatthew 16: 13-20 • Theme for 2012: His Church: United in Passionate Service “One body...one Spirit...one Lord...one faith..” Ephesians 4:4,5

  2. This year, we want to focus on the Church and our biblical call to be UNITED • SERVING the Lord with ALL OUR ENERGY • A natural progression from previous themes: • 2010: Cultivating Godly Character • Matthew 5:20 [ESV] - “Unless your righteousness exceeds that [of the religious leaders], you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” • It was a year of personal challenge

  3. 2011: Come…Be a Committed Disciple • A challenge to each of us as individualsbut working togetherin discipleship groups • Luke 9:23 [NLT] - “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me.” • The call to discipleship is a daily call.

  4. Our new theme takes us a step further in our spiritual journey • We will look at how we as individuals come together to be a part of THE CHURCH. • The book of Ephesians will be our guide. • Ephesians: “the blueprint for the church” • What is “The Church”? • Jesus wasn’t talking about a structure. • He was talking about people – a special group of people

  5. The church  a unique group of individuals who by faith have trusted in Jesus Christand have been born again of the Spirit of God. • The Bible teaches that all believers together form the Universal Church. • Ephesians 1: 22-23 [NIV] – “And God placed all things under his [Christ’s] feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.”

  6. This Universal Church began on the day of Pentecost. • Acts 2:40-41 [ESV] – “And with many other words [Peter] bore witness and continued to exhort [the people], saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.” • If you have also put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour, you are part of the Universal Church of Jesus Christ.

  7. Key principles regarding the church: • The Foundation of the Church • The Certainty of the Church • The Intimacy of the Church • The Invincibility of the Church

  8. 1. The Foundation of the Church • Matthew 16:18 [ESV] – “And I tell you, [Jesus said] you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church.” • What is this rock that Christ will build His church on? • Ephesians 2:19-20 [ESV] – “So then you are… members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone.” • Matthew 7:24 [ESV] - “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

  9. Jesus was addressing Peter as the representativeof His disciples. • He would build His churchand its foundation will be the WORD His teachings. • Jesus commissioned His disciples to take His messageof salvation throughout the world. • Acts 1:8 [ESV] – “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

  10. Acts 2:42 [ESV] – “And [the believers] devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” • The foundation of the church is the revelation of God given through His apostles, and the Lord of the church is the cornerstone of that foundation. Because it is His Word that the apostles taught and that the faithful church has always taught, Jesus Christ Himself is the true foundation, the living Word to whom the written Word bears witness. John MacArthur Jr.

  11. The Certainty of the Church • Matthew 16:18 [ESV] – “ Iwill build my church” • If Jesus says He will build it you can know with certainty it will be built. • It is not faithful believers who will build the church but Christ who will build His church through faithful believers. John MacArthur Jr. • We need to make ourselves available to be used by God as He builds His Church. • Are you ready to be an active participant in HIS CHURCH?

  12. 3. The Intimacy of the Church • Jesus loves the church because it is His special possession. • Matthew 16:18 [ESV] – “I will build MY church” • Acts 20:28 [NIV] – “Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.” • John 17:20-23 [ESV] - “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word…The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, … so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.”

  13. Jesus loves His church and when His church is hurting – He hurts. • Acts 9:4 [NIV] - “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting ME.” • John 13:34 [ESV] – “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” • We are called to love one another in the body of Christ and to treat one another with honor and respect. • When we hurt each other, we ultimately hurt the Lord Jesus.

  14. 4. The Invincibility of the Church • Matthew 16:18 [ESV] – “I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” • Jesus is telling us that His church will being advancing by proclaiming the truth of the gospel:  Jesus Christ conquered sin and death • What a wonderful assurance! • The daily battles continue to wage on but the war has already been won. • Christ’s church is invincible.

  15. One of our primary purposes as the body of Christ, is to be serving our Lord together. • We need to be UNITED in our service. • We need to be serving PASSIONATELY • Are you ready to be an active participant in His Church here in Beamsville? • 1919: American Messenger Company became the United Parcel Service

  16. United Parcel Service Calvary Gospel Church: United in Passion Service • Delivering truth through sharing God’s Word • Delivering encouragement to one another • Delivering faithful passionate service to the Lord as we work together in ministry in 2012
