Introduction • Personal study for MSc Housing • A survey of academics that deliver housing courses at level 4 and above at UK Higher Educations Institutions (HEI) 2 aims: • The employer engagement activities that were undertaken • Attitudes towards employer involvement in such courses 2 outcomes: • Provided a broad snapshot of employer involvement activity in housing courses on offer by HEIs across the UK, • Gathered useful general views from academics about the employer engagement agenda.

Results • Range of employer involvement and engagement activity. • Some activities were more popular than others • The relevance and frequency of some activities was linked to whether courses were full time or part time. • The success of activities varied between HEIs. • The most popular activities were integrating work based learning into existing modules and lectures delivered by industry professionals. • The least popular activities were formally recording employer involvement / engagement and involvement in recruitment schemes.

  10. General views • All were aware of the issue and had indentified a need to continue or set up • Conflict between different activities / agendas • Conflict between traditional and new subject areas • Some very positive experiences • Some very negative experiences • Recession and new Government

Recommendations • Wide variety of activities • WAG looking at KPIs • Learning for Jobs (OECD, 2007) – variety of recommendations for learning related to vocations • FFORWM (2004) – employer engagement should be embedded across the HEI sector with procedures and targets • MSc recommendations – key theme is communication

Conclusions • Healthy level and variety of activity • Government policy explicitly favours increased levels of employer interaction with HEIs • Offers opportunities to market orientated HEIs • Increasing importance of employability skills • Language – employer engagement / knowledge transfer vs equal relationships
