  3. Problem Statement • Engineering students’ design process typically ends at CAD drawing. With the aid of a rapid prototyping machine we would be able to create physical models. • 3D Printing Video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t396jaNVxNQ&NR=1

  4. Objectives • Facilitate learning of the design process • Create usable parts for projects • Other Possibility: • Fundraising for Engineering club by selling prototypes • Physical models for other majors

  5. 3D Printer Technology • Builds layer by layer on top of each other • Part specified with an STL File • Small triangular mesh over the surface area • 3 Main Methods • Stereolithography • Inkjet • Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)

  6. Stereolithography • Photosensitive Liquid Resin • Expose to UV laser • Over-bake to create support structure while printing

  7. Inkjet Printing • Same technology as regular Inkjet printers • Layers of powder • Spray a Binder Resin • Post treat with a liquid resin bath

  8. Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) • Melts a thin thermoplastic wire • Extrudes the material to build each layer • Must have a second extruder with a soluble thermoplastic to build support structure

  10. General Criteria • Cost- less than $1500 • User and repair manuals.

  11. Physical Criteria • The 3D printer will fit through a standard door • Weight Requirements • Space for two printer heads with the ability to print with two different materials. • Easy to replace parts that are standardized to some extent repair this can be described.

  12. Prototype Criteria • Size- 8”×8”×8” printing area. • Precision: +- 0.2mm in the X & Y plane, +- 0.4mm in all three directions (X, Y, & Z). • Parts will easily detach from baseplate

  13. Safety Criteria • Emergency stop feature • 5 second response time • Sound limit- 90 dB

  14. Operation Criteria • Single page easy to use instructions. • 110 V, less than 15 amps. • 5 minute reload time • Print time • Simple part – 45 minutes • Complex Part – 2.5 hours • Pause / resume feature

  16. Choosing Project • Chose Fused Deposition Modeling Technology 1. Wide range of parts available at low cost 2. Functional parts for projects can be manufactured 3. Feasible project within our budget and time period. Fused deposition modeling: 1 - nozzle ejecting molten plastic, 2 - deposited material (modeled part), 3 - controlled movable table

  17. 3 D Printer Structure • Extruder will move in Z-direction and base will move in XY-direction. • Z-direction a. Four/two threaded rods b. Rack and pinion • XY-direction a. Timing belt b. Threaded rods

  18. Extruder Head • Purchased extruder head 1. Complicated part to manufacture. 2. Cost less to buy than to manufacture. Objective: • To create a control system to run experiments • To measure the flow rate of the thermoplastic • To test the strength of the printed materials. • To run experiments on extruding and the speed of printing.
