Circular Reasoning “Dieting is boring because it requires reducing caloric intake.” “Soccer is a violent sport because it involves players in aggressive play.” Cause and Effect “Because I failed the exam, my friends abandoned me.” “Ours is not a wealthy neighborhood; all of its residents are hard-working people.”

Faulty Logic • Non Sequitur “James would be a great politician because he is an accomplished skier.” “Dr. Bragg is a great teacher because he was an outstanding athlete in high school and college.” • Either/Or “Pass this class or work at McDonald’s the rest of your life.” “Know virtual salt or not- the choice is yours!!”

Faulty Logic • False Authority “Dr. Bragg says using Crest toothpaste is great for the teeth.” “Michael Vick says an Alaskan Cruise is the best way to spend a vacation.” • Ad Hominem “I know she is the brightest kid in the class, but she also has been in trouble and had to attend summer school.” “Michael Vick may be a great football player, but he is now a convicted felon.”

Faulty Logic • Bandwagon Thinking “I cheated on my federal income taxes because everyone does and few get caught.” “I will love Dr. Bragg and AP Language because every student who has taken his class in the past has loved it!!” • Emotional Appeal “I know I made a mistake, but I have found God and He will help me through this difficult time.” “If we can not find homes for these animals by the weekend, they will be destroyed.”

5. Faulty Logic • Loose Generalization “Blondes do have more fun.” “Tall people love ice cream.” • Hasty Generalization “European students are better in Math as compared to American students.” “Dr. Bragg’s students have more success in college than those students who did not have him as a teacher.”
