  3. The Reaction • Make the methanol a nucleophile • NaOH + CH3OH Na(aq) + H2O + CH3O- • Making the Bio Diesel • CH3O- + Triglyceride Glycerin + Methyl ester

  4. The Reaction Cont. • Watch the PH of the Methoxide solution • Let the Methoxide solution cool to 30o- 40o • Mix the Methoxide solution with the Triglyceride • Let Bio Diesel solution sit for 24 hours • Drain off Glycerin • Wash Bio Diesel solution twice

  6. Storage and Use • Storage • Test methanol levels in Bio Diesel • Will keep forever • Do not fill container more than ¾ full • Use • Add kerosene in winter • Filter again before use
