Symptoms of Red-Green Colorblindness • Trouble seeing colors and brightness of colors • Mixing up colors and not being able to distinguish differences in colors such as Red-Green, Yellow-Green, Blue-Purple, Green-Brown, etc. • May have a limited view of color, seeing only a few shades of colors. • Its hard to know if one is colorblind because they do not know what they are seeing is any different from anybody else. (Vorvick). 45

Genetics! • Red-Green colorblindness is caused by a sex linked recessive trait on the X chromosome. • If a recessive allele is present on a males X chromosome he most likely inherited it from his mother. Many women are carriers of recessive X, and inherit it from a colorblind father. • Having two recessive X linked alleles for a female results in colorblindness, while affected males only have the recessive allele on their X chromosome. • Having an affected genotype usually means that there are mutations “involving the OPN1LW and OPN1MW genes”(Color vision deficiency). Mutations on these genes result in an absence of L and/or M cones inside the eye. This causes the abnormal vision properties.

  4. Location • The genes and genetic information that cause abnormal or missing cones, is located on the X chromosome. • Traits inherited from the X chromosome are known as a sex linked traits inherited from the mother.

  5. Living with Red-Green Colorblindness • People living with colorblindness live with minor frustrations. Such as: • Traffic light difficulty • Can never tell when they are sunburned • Trouble cooking because do not know the difference of redness in meats • Kids have trouble with crayon colors. • Does not have that great of an impact on family and individual. (Heath).

  6. Treatment • “As for today there is no known treatment to cure color blindness but maybe in the near future there will be some possibilities to overcome color blindness and even enhance color vision overall”(Fluck). • No way to prevent Color Blindness besides mate selection.

  7. History • John Dalton was the first to engage in Color blindness studies. He wrote a paper that described people having “colored liquid inside the eyeball is the source for a different color perception”(Fluck). • Later Thomas Young developed the trichromatic vision theory which included rods and cones as the basis of color vision.
