  1. Becoming a Matthew: A Model for EvangelismLuke 5:27-32 • My HOPE Project  a model for evangelism • Fear is one of the main hindrances to evangelism. • A simple model of evangelism: • The conversion experience of one of Jesus’ disciples • His name was Matthew (Levi).

  2. Calling of Matthew  a pattern in Jesus’ ministry: • Jesus reached out to those who were on the fringes of society • Matthew – was a tax collector – a social outcast • Evangelism has no racial, social, or economic boundaries. • The Mandate for Evangelism • Our Motive for Evangelism • A Model for Evangelism

  3. 1. The Mandate For Evangelism • Evangelism was at the heart of Jesus’ ministry. • Luke 4:43 (NIV) [Jesus] said, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God … because that is why I was sent.” • good news  the “gospel” • The truth that Jesus Christ came into the world to bring salvation to sinners. • Jesus set the example in what message to bring but also that evangelism involves GOING.

  4. Matthew 28:18–20 (NIV) - Then Jesus came to them [his disciples] and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore GO and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” • Mark 16:15 (NIV) – [Jesus] said to [his disciples], “GO into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.

  5. Jesus passed the mandate on to us – His church. • The mandate for evangelism does not fall only on ministry leaders in the church. • Acts 8:1,4 (NIV) - On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria… Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. • The mandate to share the gospel is repeated over and over again for all believers to follow.

  6. Acts 20:24 (NIV) I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me… • …the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace. • The Apostle Paul took his mandate to testify to the gospel seriously. • Do you take this mandate to share the gospelseriously?

  7. 2. Our Motive For Evangelism • Our love for God. • John 14:15 (NIV) - “If you love me, you will obey what I command. • The Bible calls us to love others as well. • We are called to love the lost. • God loves the lost. • 2 Peter 3:9 (NIV) - The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

  8. Luke 19:10 (NIV) – “For the Son of Man came to seek and save what was lost. • Matthew tells us Jesus had tremendous compassion for those who were lost • Matthew 9:35–38 (NIV) Jesus went through all the towns and villages…preaching the good news of the kingdom…When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

  9. 3. A Model For Evangelism • Ways to do evangelism: • We can give a person a Bible • We can give a person a tract • We can tell them OUR story  How has Christ made a difference in our life! • Luke 5:27–28 (NIV) - Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of [Matthew] sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him. • …and [he] got up, left everything and followed him.

  10. Luke 5:29 (NIV) - Then [Matthew] held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. • Matthew throws a party at his home • invites all his friends and colleagues • uses the opportunity to introduce them to this Jesus the one who has just changed his life forever.

  11. Jesus gave us the MANDATE for evangelism. • The Bible teaches us the MOTIVE – love for God and love for the lost. • This fall, we want to use this Matthew MODEL. • We need to earn the right to share our story  building relationships with the lost. • Will you become a Matthew?
