  4. Course Objectives To understand the role of corporations in American life. To be aware of the responsibilities of business to the broader society. To gain an increased understanding of environmental issues associated with the business. To view corporations from the stakeholder perspective. To understand the impacts of information technology on business and how business can utilize it to become more efficient and effective. To reinforce oral presentation skill: required GE policy

  7. Class Activity 2 • Technology Ethics Report • Group activity • Must submit the report • Oral presentation • Possible presentation dates on the website schedule • Week 13, 14, and 15 • Presentation date will be assigned by your instructor.

  8. Lecture of Key Topics • Cover important topics you need to know • From textbook and other sources • Customized lecture notes • Lecture note of each chapter by the publisher • Ethics in Practice • Class discussion • Assignment

  9. End of Text Case • The cases are available from the textbook page 569 (9th edition only!) • Answer “Questions for Discussion” at the end of each case. • Must turn in thru the BB submission link • Grading based on “quality of analysis.” • Review the instruction on the website!

  10. Tech. Ethics Report • Review the instruction on the website! • introduction with problem statement --> body of paper with your own arguments --> conclusion with solutions. • Make sure that it must be at least whole three pages (i.e., two and half pages are not acceptable).

  11. Report Oral Presentation 1 • Might be the most difficult activity • More difficult than individual presentation. • Create a group of min. 3 or max. 4 & email me the list of group members. • Feb 26: create a group & discuss the report proposal • Must use Microsoft PowerPoint • CSUB official SW and avoid possible problems • Email me your slide a day before your presentation.

Report Oral Presentation 2 • Group Presentation time • Should be exactly 10 minutes. • 30 seconds deviation allowed • Severely penalized if finishing • early (less than 8 minutes) or late (more than 12 minutes) • No media file (e.g., YouTube Video) is allowed. • Reading your flash card or slides or full report • You will be stopped right away and you will be severely penalized. • Even distribution of presentation time

  14. Online Quiz 1 • Total 9 quizzes and each one is 3 points • Quiz 1 (ch 1 & 2), Quiz 2 (ch 3 & 4)…….. • 40 true/false questions and only two options, either "PASS" or "FAIL" • To pass each quiz, your score percentage must be AT LEAST 80% (32 out of 40 or greater than equal to 2.4 points).

  15. Online Quiz 2 • Pass the quiz  keep your passing score. • Fail the quiz  earn nothing (zero points).  • Allowed two times and each attempt must be completed in 60 minutes.  • Your quiz will be saved and submitted automatically by the system (BB) when time expires.

  16. Exam • Three Exams thru Blackboard • Allowed to attempt two times • Must finish in 90 minutes • Your exam will be saved and submitted automatically by the system (BB) when time expires. • Each exam date is on the website

  18. Submission Guideline 1 • Make sure to submit your file thru Blackboard. Otherwise, it will not be accepted. • No email submission is accepted • Before submitting thru Blackboard, make sure to CLOSE the Microsoft office application (i.e., Word) COMPLETELY.

  19. Submission Guideline 2 • Otherwise, ONLY title of you file will be submitted and processed without including actual contents of your file. • And if you need to submit more than one files, you must submit all files together at once.

  20. Class attendance Required and more than two absences will negatively impact your final grade (at least 30% penalty of total score). Submission of a written excuse: doctor’s note, employer’s note, copy of flight ticket, etc. “Partial Attendance” is also treated as “Absent.” Missing “SOCI Day” class May 7th (will be announced) 10% Penalty will be applied.

  21. Email Policy Every CSUB student has a CSUB issued email address (just like mine!) Official email is CSUB Email. If you email me using your private email, I will not reply!

  22. Class Announcement Post thru the class announcement page on the class website Send by email as well if necessary (e.g., cancellation of class) Make sure to check the class announcement page and email periodically Especially, one day before the class

  23. No Interference Policy • Surfing the Internet, typing (email, paper…) and cell phone texting • Private talking...... • Bottom line…do not distract me and others • Up to 30 % of your total score can be deducted depending on the level of interference.

  24. Late Policy • All Students must be on time to the class. • If you late more than 20 minuteswithout any notification (at least 24 hours before), it will be considered as “ABSENCE.” • Also, if you leave early without my permission, it will be considered as “ABSENCE.”

  25. Late Work • Will not be accepted! • The link for assignment submissions, exams, and quizzes will disappear after due dates • Failure to submit an assignment by the deadline will result in a grade of 0.

  26. Peer Group Evaluation • Peer Group Evaluationis a part of the grading scheme to prevent free riding in the group. • Download the form from the class website • Your evaluation is 100% confidential • Your case grade will be adjusted based on the peer evaluation. • Submit by email by the end of term

  27. Software Policy • Microsoft Office (PC version) is the ONLY official software for our university. Thus, no other SW tool is allowed. • Any work submitted not using Microsoft Office will not be accepted. • Download the most current MS Office thru CSUB Office 365. • www.csub.edu/office365
