  3. Vocabulary • Indulgence • n. leniency; readiness to tolerate or forgive bad behavior • If you show a child too much indulgence you may spoil her. • Grimacing • v. Making a twisted face showing disgust or pain • She is grimacing because she has a splinter in her toe. • Meager • adj. Of poor quality or small amount. • Due to poor rainfall, there was only a meager crop.

  4. Continued… • Trace • Tiny amount; hint • There was not even a trace of cake left. • Fraud • n. Deceit; trickery • There are strict penalties for insurance fraud. • Engaging • adj. Attractive; pleasant • The doctor’s engaging personality puts his patients at ease.

  6. Vocabulary • Apathy-n. lack of interest or emotion (p.39) The bored audience looked at the speaker with apathy. • Credulity- n. Tendency to believe too readily (p.36) Due to his credulity, Tim was unaware that the news report was fake. • Furtively- adv. Secretively ; sneakily; stealthy (p. 39) When no one was looking, she reached furtively for the last slice of pie.

Grave- adj. very serious and worrying (p.35) The doctor had a grave expression on her face when she gave John’s family the bad news. • Maligned- adj. spoken ill of (p.36) The CD maligned by critics, was still a tremendous hit. • Oppressive- adj. Causing great discomfort; distressing (p.41) The heat was so oppressive that they finally opened a window.

  9. Vocabulary • Convoluted: adj. twisted in a complicated way • The convoluted maze confused us. • Verified: v. proved to be true • He verified the results of the test by double-checking the scores. • Deftness: n. skillfulness • She climbed with deftness of a mountain goat.

  10. Vocabulary Continued • Imperceptibly: adv. So slowly or slightly as to be barely noticeable • I did not notice when the fish nibbled imperceptibly at my bait • Reveling: v. Taking great pleasure or delight • When she got her first job she could not stop reveling in her newfound independence. • Interminable: adj. Endless or seeming endless • The wait seemed interminable to the impatient shopper.

Vocabulary • Titanic: adj. powerful, of great size • A single titanic wave sank the ship. • Paranoia: n. mental disorder characterized by delusions • His irrational fear of crowded places could be a sign or paranoia. • Fluttered: v. flapped or vibrated rapidly • The papers fluttered in the wind and then blew away.
