  2. Background Paul’s emphasis upon grace has resulted in the charge that Paul has lost his love for the law and no longer understands the law’s value.

  3. Romans 7:1 TARGET AUDIENCE • “Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion [binding] over a man as long as he liveth?” • Mosaic Law given at Mt. Sinai • AKA “Ten Commandments”

  4. Another Imperfect Analogy • Wife to husband • The husband’s death is the only thing that releases her to remarry. • Romans 7:4 • “Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.”

  8. John 15:2 • “Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he [the Father] taketh away: • and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it [prunes], • that it may bring forth more fruit.” • Pruning is the evidence that you are converted.

  9. ~News Flash~ God’s plan for your life RIGHT NOW is to bear MUCH fruit!

  10. John 15:5 • “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” • What does it mean to ABIDE in Jesus?

  11. Abide • Continuous process of • Being in a close relationship with Jesus characterized by • Trust (dependency/reliance) • Prayer (worship) • Bible Study (personal and corporate) • Obedience • Joy

  12. John 15:5 • “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” • Bearing fruit is God’s plan.

Genesis 1:11-12 • God is well pleased when His creation bears FRUIT! • “And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.”

  14. What is Fruit? • “Fruit is an image for good results coming from the life of a believer, probably in terms of bringing benefit to the lives of others and advancing the work of God in the world.” --ESV Study Bible

  15. What is bearing fruit for a basketball player? • Scoring & rebounding • Passing & assisting as a team player • Blocking & interfering with the other team’s execution • Leading on and off the court • Increasing in skills & stamina

  16. Likewise All Christians are expected to ABIDE in Christ and bear FRUIT.

  18. John 15:6 • “If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.” • Evidence of salvation is a lifetime of abiding and bearing much fruit.

  19. John 15:8 • “Herein [in this way] is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.” What am I doing to bear much fruit?

  21. Saved for a Purpose • The primary reason God saved you is NOT so that you can go to heaven. • The primary reason God saved you is so that God would be glorified in your salvation both • Now on this earth, and • For all eternity.

  22. Question: Is my life glorifying to God?

  23. Matthew 5:16 • “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Is my life advancing the cause of Christ on this planet?

  24. Which is more God glorifying?living

  25. Step One to living a God-glorifying life is living in the grace of God.

  26. What is the greatest demonstration of God’s grace? Answer: The Gospel of the Lord Jesus

  27. Here is Grace • John 15:16 • “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: [and] that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.”

  28. Grace • Grace is the glorious truth that my choice of repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ was a response to the work of the Holy Spirit drawing me to God when I deserved just the opposite. Eph 2:8-9, Acts 20:21, John 6:44

  29. Step Two to Living a God-glorifying life is making knowing Christ Your passion.

  30. Philippians 3:8-9 • “Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win [gain] Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

  31. Philippians 3:10 • “That I may know Him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death . . .”

  32. Step Three to living a God-glorifying life is proclaiming Christ In word and deed In “My World.”

  33. Acts 1:8—In Word • “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

  34. Why Am I seeking to KNOW Christ? So that I can make HIM Known!

  35. 1 Peter 3:15 • “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear . . .”

  36. What is the easiest way for every Christian to make Christ known? A: Invite someone to church.

  37. Step Three to living a God-glorifying life proclaiming Christ in word and deed in “My World.”

  38. Step Three—In “deed” • Matthew 5:6 • “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” • These people are passionate about seeing God’s glorious character in their own lives and in the lives of others.

  39. Circle of Influence My Commitment • I want to see God’s glorious character reflected in my life and in the lives of others as much as is in me to influence them.
