  1. Motion Speed and Velocity

  2. Motion • When an object changes its position, motion has occurred. • Distance- How far an object has moved. • Displacement- How far an object has moved in relation to its starting point. • Consider direction Example: Two runners travel along the same straight path in a straight line for 500 meters. At the end of the run their distances are the same but their displacements are different. How can this be so?

  3. Speed and Velocity

  4. Speed • Definition • Rate of displacement • Basically how fast something is moving • Formulas • Speed • S = D / T • Units: m/s, km/h, cm/s, mm/s • Distance • D = T x S • Units: km, m, cm, mm • Time • T = D / S • Units: hour, seconds

  5. Velocity • Definition • The rate of displacement in a given direction • For example: Car A travels East at 50km/h, Car B travels West at 50km/h. • Do they have the same Speed? • Yes – 50km/h • Do they have the same velocity? • No - Car A is traveling east at 50km/h, Car B is traveling west at 50km/h

  6. Velocity • A car travels a 2,000 meter track in 200 seconds. • Speed? • 10m/s • Velocity? • What direction is the car moving? • Big circle • Is the car traveling anywhere? • No • 0 m/s

  7. Velocity Examples • A Dog travels east on the sidewalk for 50 meters. It takes him 10 seconds. What is its velocity? • Total displaced distance • 50 meters • 50m/10s • 5m/s • A runner runs 1km down the street turns around and runs 1km back to the starting point. It took the runner 15 minutes. What is its velocity? • Total displace distance • 0km • 0km/15min • 0km/min

  8. Velocity Examples • A skydiver falls 10km from an airplane it takes the diver 5 minutes to hit the ground. What is its velocity. • Total displaced distance • 10km • 10km/5min • 2km/min • A bungee jumper drops 50 meters and bounces back up 40 meters it took him 10 seconds to do this. What is their velocity? • Total displaced distance • 10m • 10m/10sec • 1m/sec

  9. Velocity Practice • Omar is the star athlete on his schools track team. He ran the 400 meter sprint in 48 seconds. What was his Velocity? • Jesse runs a mile (1609 m) from 23rd street to 36th street in 6 minutes. What has her velocity? • Brandy and Kara are on a relay team. Brandy runs the first 50 meters, Kara must run back but falls halfway back and cannot continue. It took them 20 seconds. What was their velocity? • Dyson ran 200 meters by running 50 meter sprints back and forth. It took him 3 minutes. What is his velocity? • The Thompsons travel 500 miles east on I-40. It took them 7 hours. What is their velocity?
