  3. Early Israel • 1948—Israel is created as a Jewish state and is recognized by the United Nations. • As Jews move in, Palestinians are forced out (thousands of Palestinian refugees.) • Economic success comes quickly—Jews work together to farm, manufacture & create a military.

  4. Arabs Attack • Israel shocks the world by repelling an attack by Egypt and winning the war in six days (Six Day War)

  5. Palestine wants self rule. Yassir Arafat leads the PLO. Signed Wye Agreement as a step toward peace. Some see him as a hero, others as a terrorist. Palestine Liberation Organization
