While the bar pilot is on board, he or she provides advice to the captain; this advice is based on knowledge of local waters, weather conditions, and the abilities of the captain's boat.   3. Note:Typically, the captain retains legal control and responsibility of the ship, although a bar pilot can be held accountable for egregious navigational errors which result in substantial damages. Pilots limits of responsibility

  4. Navigation with Pilot onboard • Means • You are navigating in teritorial waters near land • You are in a channel • You are in a river • You are in Panama Canal • You are in Suez Canal • And other bodies of water that is occupied by a state or country

  5. Duties of the Pilot • Sole duty • is an advisor to the Captain • The pilot does not relieve the Captain or the OOW from their duties and obligations for the safety of the ship

  6. DUTies of OOW • Assist the Pilot in the safe navigation of the vessel • If in doubt as to the pilots actions or intentions, the OOW shall seek clarification
