  1. What is it? An interactive self-paced tutorial to help students at Loughborough University to improve their information and study skills. • Content • Introduction, conclusion and six modules: • Using the Library • Understanding information • Your information strategy, including managing your time, understanding the question, formulating a search strategy and keeping notes. • Electronic information, including making the most of MetaLib, databases and the Internet. • Evaluating your information • Presenting your information, including writing skills, plagiarism, citation and bibliographies and oral presentations. http://www.lboro.ac.uk/library/InfoTrail/Intro/ Why we did it Primary aim: To improve students information skills so they are less dependent on Google and rely more on good quality information in the production of assignments. Objectives: To produce Loughborough specific online learning materials in line with good pedagogy to benefit: a) Students, helping them become independent seekers of information. b) Academic staff, as their students provide a higher quality of coursework which draws on a variety of sources and is well-referenced. c) Library staff by provision of a resource which they can refer students to whilst working on the Information Desks or providing training. • Features • Activities, including Hot Potatoes exercises such as crosswords and drag ‘n’ drop • Tests and activities to help students reflect upon and record their skills • Mini tutorials (Informs, soon to be replaced by Captivate) • Pictures and links • People hours and skills • Project Assistant: Katie Appleton. Worked on the project for one day each week for 15 months, with continued involvement beyond this. • Skills and knowledge required: • Project planning • Understanding pedagogy • Web page design, including using Dreamweaver, html and css. • Knowledge of information literacy and of the information and study skills needs of students • Communication and presentation skills to engage the involvement and awareness of other staff members. • Project Manager: Ruth Stubbings • Challenges • Unexpectedly large scale of the project • Some Academic Librarians were unable to contribute as much as planned in writing material Usage figures and feedback InfoTrail@Lboro was launched at the end of February 2007. Module 3, Your information strategy, was the most popular with 3820 hits in March, 2829 in April and 4390 in May. Unofficial feedback has been encouraging, questionnaire feedback pending. Funding Ruth Stubbings made a successful bid for a University Higher Practice Award of £5,000 in 2005.
