History, Mission, Vision • History • Established in 1964 by medical students at Howard University and Meharry Medical College as the student section of National Medical Association (NMA) • 1967 became an independent organization separate from the NMA • Today is the oldest and largest organization focused on the concerns of medical students of color Back to topics

History, Mission, Vision • Mission The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is committed to supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians.   6. History, Mission, Vision • Vision • The SNMA commits to the empowerment of its members to take proactive steps to address minority health issues through advocacy and community service. As such, SNMA works to promote the professional development of its members, so that they may have the potential for being the underrepresented minority (URM) health leaders of tomorrow. • SNMA URM pre-medical students with knowledge, skills and experiences that are both pre-requisite and concomitant to professional participation in the health care industry. • SNMA commits to actively engaging in health advocacy to address inequities in medical education; racial/ethnic health disparities; and injustices in U.S. domestic and foreign health policy. SNMA will work to ensure equity in health care, serve as community health advocates, succeed as leaders in academic medicine, and direct health policy change. Back to topics

Composition and Structure • Nearly 5,500 allopathic and osteopathic medical, pre-medical, physician/patron, corporate, and institutional members • Over 140chapters nationwide, with new chapters being established internationally • 10 regions nationwide spanning the U.S. and Caribbean Back to topics

Composition and Structure • House of Delegates (HOD) – the supreme governing body of the SNMA; meets once yearly at the Annual Medical Education Conference; must approve ALL actions of the BOD and EC • Board of Directors (BOD) – governing body when the HOD is not in session; meets quarterly • Executive Committee (EC) – governing body when the BOD is not in session; meets monthly • National Headquarters (HQ) – clearing house for all SNMA administrative functions Back to topics

SNMA Events • National Leadership Institute • SNMA’s official Leadership Development Program for all SNMA members • Board of Directors Meetings • The Board meets quarterly to discuss the business of the SNMA.
