  1. Human Uses of Plants Vanilla Ice Cream Kashif and Sarah

  2. Plant Source & What Part of the Plant is Used to Make Our Product Vanilla fruit is obtained from a vanilla orchid plant, which grows as a bean pod Vanilla beans are required to make vanilla ice-cream

  3. Plant Source & What Part of the Plant is Used to Make Our Product There are more than 110 different types of vanilla orchids, but only one produces vanilla that we consume The common vanilla that we use is the product of an orchid called ‘Vanilla Planifolia’

  4. Natural History of the Vanilla Plant Vanilla orchids are found in countries with tropical climates, such as Mexico, Madagascar, Mauritius, Indonesia and Uganda • Mexico was once the original location of vanilla, but now it only produces meager quantities

  5. How to Harvest Vanilla Beans Harvesting the vanilla beans is a long process Vanilla beans grow quickly on the vine, but require about 10 months to completely mature Each vanilla bean matures at it’s own rate, therefore daily harvesting is required The quality of the beans is based on it’s length. 15cm+ long beans are first quality (the finest beans) After hand-picking vanilla beans, they must be cured before they are sold

  6. How to Harvest Vanilla Beans There are three basic steps involved in curing vanilla beans: Killing Sweating Drying

  7. Killing First, in order to remove the vegetative tissue, the vanilla pod is dipped into hot water for three minutes The water is usually around 63*C – 65*C This also allows chemical reactions to take place in the next step

  8. Sweating Next, the beans are wrapped in cloths and allowed to absorb sunlight for 1 hour each day, for up to 10 days After the 1 hour, they are placed in wooden boxes In the box, chemical reactions take place which ensure the vanilla beans develop their characteristic flavor and aroma

  9. Drying After sweating, the next step is to dry the beans The beans are placed on racks to absorb sunlight for three to four weeks When 25 – 30% of the beans weight is moisture, the curing process is complete and the vanilla beans are ready for shipment and sale

  10. History of Vanilla It was the Spanish who first understood the value of vanilla pods They conquered the Aztecs in Mexico and took large quantities of vanilla beans back to Spain, where they were combined with cacao to create an entirely new drink for the wealthy

  11. History of Vanilla In the past Madagascar was the main vanilla producer, but in recent years many different countries have started to produce vanilla, each with a slightly unique taste • Vanilla from Madagascar is said to be of the highest quality (creamy, sweet, smooth flavor)

  12. How Does Vanilla Ice-cream Affect the Quality of Human Life (Nutritional/Health-wise)? Vanilla Ice-cream contains some health benefits The cream and milk contains traces of protein and calcium The vanilla extract used in the ice-cream may have the ability to reduce anxiety if inhaled

  13. How Does Vanilla Ice-cream Affect the Quality of Human Life (Nutritional/Health-wise)? Although eating vanilla ice-cream does have some benefits, the negative health effects far outweigh the positive The cream and milk used in the ice-cream have high levels of fat and sugar Eating excessive amounts of ice-cream may result in health issues

  14. How to Make Vanilla Extract In order to make vanilla ice-cream, we must first obtain vanilla extract: Mash/soften chopped vanilla beans in ethyl alcohol and water for 48 hours

  15. How to Make Vanilla Extract This mixture is then left to age for several months, and then it is filtered The liquid obtained after this process is called ‘vanilla extract’, and this is used to make vanilla ice-cream

  16. How to Make Vanilla Ice-cream In a bowl, mix somehalf-and-half cream with a ¾ cup of sugar Whisk this mixture until it is completely blended and the sugar dissolves

  17. How to Make Vanilla Ice-cream Add whipped cream to the mixture Add 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract Mix until everything is completely combined

  18. How to Make Vanilla Ice-cream Pour the ice-cream into a container and place it in afreezer Repeatedly remove the ice-cream from the fridge every half an hour and stir it with a whisk After removing and whisking the ice-cream four times, put it back into the freezer and wait for it to completely harden

  19. What are the Chemical Waste Products Resulting from Manufacturing Vanilla Ice-cream? There are no direct waste products from harvesting and obtaining vanilla beans, since they are hand picked However, the process involved with producing the ice-cream has negative effects on the ecosystem The factories in which the ice-cream is made produce greenhouse gases and pollute the environment

  20. How Does the Chemical Waste Impact Nature? Since vanilla is transported all over the world, exporting and importing methods also produce pollution Vanilla ice-cream is usually a favorite in many countries, so the demand would be very high This means that mass-production of vanilla ice-cream would result in very high levels of pollution

  21. How Is Vanilla Ice-cream Important to Society? Vanilla ice-cream is enjoyed by millions of people all over the world We use vanilla in many things beside ice-cream, such as cakes, pastries, drinks, perfumes, air fresheners and even medicine Vanilla has quickly become one of the most popular taste enhancers in the world, often added to coffee, milk and other beverages to give them a ‘better’ taste

  22. How Is Vanilla Ice-cream Important to Society? A survey carried out in 2007 regarding a group of children’s favorite ice-cream flavors provided the following results: Vanilla: 35% Chocolate: 24% Strawberry: 17% Other: 24% The results show that out of an entire school, the most popular ice-cream flavor was vanilla
