  3. Transitive Verbs: Directs the action to a receiver of the action Example: The captain rang the bell. (what “rang” – the bell) The receiver of the action is a noun or pronoun Intransitive Verbs: Expresses action about the subject of the sentence but does not direct the action towards another noun/pronoun. Example: The captain rang for dinner. There is no receiver of the action. Action Verbs

  4. Visible Action Sail Rip Bring Traveled Swim Migrates Smile Cried Laughed Mental Action Think Remember Understand Expect Consider Decide Hope Forget Want Mental and Visible Action Verbs

  5. Linking Verb • Connects a noun or pronoun with a word which describes or renames that noun or pronoun • Example: The Sahara is a desert. The desert feels sweltering. List of Linking Verbs: is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been, appears, becomes, feels, grows, looks, remains, seems, smells, sounds, stays, tastes, turns

  6. Helping Verbs • A verb or verbs added to the main verb to form a verb phrase • May be separated by another word such as not, never, hardly, seldom….

  7. Helping Verbs • is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been • can, could • do, does, did • has, have, had • may, might, must • shall, should • will, would
