History… • The Gothic period later followed the Romans in the 13thcentury. • People of that time wanted the Cathedrals to be brighter and more majestic and get away from the darkness of the Romanesque Period. • To get this appearance some new architectural systems needed to be invented. • The Gothic period introduced pointed arches, ribbed vaults and flying buttresses. • The Gothic period also introduced stain glass windows that helped bring light into the buildings.

  3. Why the different style? • Gothic structures were used for religious purposes and used a lot of symbolism. • The pointed arches created mans eyes to follow up towards to heavens. • Ribbed vaults allowed structures to be open, high and spacious. • Flying buttresses provided support so that glass could be in place of arches and other supports. • The Gothic style offered a warm feeling compared to previous structures.
