  1. What is HIV? • HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus -- a big name! • A virus is like a germ that makes people sick. • Just like germs, viruses can be spread from person to person. This is a magnified picture of the virus that causes AIDS.

  2. How is HIV passed from one person to another? • HIV is a different virus from the kind that cause colds. • HIV can’t be spread by sneezing or coughing or by touching someone who has it.

  3. So how IS HIV passed, if it’s not the same way you catch a cold? • HIV is a weak virus, but it causes a scary disease called AIDS. It can only live in blood. • You need to be really, really careful whenever you see blood, or things that touch blood.

  4. What should I avoid? • You don’t want your blood to mix with the blood of anyone else. • Be very careful when someone is bleeding. If you have a cut in your skin, their blood could mix with yours.

  5. What else can pass HIV from one person to another? • Needles are another way that HIV can go from one person’s blood to another person. NEVER touch needles, razors, or syringes, whether you see blood on them or not. It’s not safe.

  6. Can I touch people who might have HIV in their blood? • Yes, HIV can only be shared if your blood touches infected blood. So you can play, hug, dance, and share clothes and food with other people who might have HIV in their blood.

  7. Can I get HIV from bug bites? • No, HIV only lives inside of people. You can’t get HIV from mosquitoes or other bug bites. • You also can’t get HIV from petting animals.

  8. How can I protect myself from getting HIV in my blood? • The best way to protect yourself is to be very careful around blood, and sharp things that can have blood on them. • Bleach can kill HIV. Bandaids can protect your cuts from getting infected with HIV and other germs and viruses.

  9. So now, it’s time for a little test. • Take this test to check if you know how HIV is spread.

  10. WHOOPS! • Nope, you’re wrong. You can’t catch HIV like you can catch a cold. It’s a different kind of virus that only lives in blood, not sneezes. • Go back and try again by clicking on the picture.

  11. SORRY! • Nope, you can’t get HIV from bug bites, because the virus can only live in humans, and not anywhere else. It dies inside of other animals and insects. • Click on the picture to go back and try again.

  12. YES! • You were paying attention! You’re right, you have to be careful around other people’s blood, especially if you have a cut in your skin. • Click on the man’s hat to celebrate!

  13. CONGRATULATIONS. • Raise your right hand over your head. • Pat yourself on the back!
