  4. What is the problem? • Too many unnecessary recalls • Inconsistent on pack ’ warning ‘ information • Customer confusion • Possible risks to health • Unnecessary costs being incurred

Vital-A possible solution? • Australian specific legislation: have to declare even if highly refined • Specifically looks at cross contamination risks • Considers particulates and dispersables • International data sources for threshold levels • Dedicated terminology ‘May be present’ • Strong advocacy from allergen bureau and consumers

  8. What does it mean in practice? • Clearer understanding of the risks • One set of rules for everyone • Less withdrawals and recalls • Increased consumer confidence and choice • Cost savings

But….its not the full answer so where can we still do better? • Improved Supply chain management • procurement • plant hygiene • New approach to hazard identification in light of food fraud and adulteration • Less risk aversion by manufacturers and consumers groups • Improved communication flows
