  4. REVIEW There are several properties of addition COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY: We can change the order and the sum stays the same. EXAMPLE: 4 + 6 = 10 6 + 4 = 10 ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY: We can change the grouping and the sum stays the same. EXAMPLE: 2 + (3+ 8) = 13 (2 + 3)+ 8= 13 IDENTITY PROPERTY: We can add zero and the sum stays the same. EXAMPLE: 7 +0 = 7 CONFIDENTIAL

  5. REVIEW Addition and Subtraction areINVERSE OPERATIONS • If we subtract 0 from any number, the difference is that same number. 13 - 0 = 13 • If we subtract a number from itself, the difference is 0. 57 - 57 = 0 CONFIDENTIAL

  7. Find: 2 x 3 STEP 1 : There are 3 rows. Each row has 2 stars. 2 stars Three times two stars is six stars. 2 + 2 + 2 = 6 2 stars 2 stars + + CONFIDENTIAL

  8. Similarly, we can rearrange the stars in the following manner also. STEP 2 : Here we have 2 rows and each row has 3 stars. 3 stars + 3 stars Two times three stars is six stars. That is 3+ 3 = 6. Hence, the result. CONFIDENTIAL

  9. Multiplication by a whole number is REPEATED ADDITION STEP 3 : We can show this by a multiplication equation. 2 x 3 = 6 Product Factor Factor CONFIDENTIAL

  10. Now here is something for you to do. There are five groups and each group has four triangles. Can you tell how many triangles are there in all? 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4= 5 x 4 = 20 CONFIDENTIAL

  11. There are several properties of multiplication. 1) COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY: We can change the order of the factors and the product stays the same. EXAMPLE: 4 x 3 = 12 3 x 4 = 12 2) IDENTITY PROPERTY: We can multiply a number by 1and the product is the number. EXAMPLE: 3 x 1 = 3 3) ZERO PROPERTY: We can multiply a number by 0 and the product is zero. EXAMPLE: 7 x 0 = 0 CONFIDENTIAL

  12. Uses of the properties of multiplication. 1) COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY: The order of the factors does not affect the product. 4 x 3 =12 4 groups of 3 cans = 12 cans 3 x 4 =12 3 groups of 4 cans = 12 cans The number of cans remain the same. CONFIDENTIAL

  13. 2) IDENTITY PROPERTY: The product of 1 and a number is the number. 5 x 1 =5 1 row of 5 cans = 5 cans. CONFIDENTIAL

  14. 3) ZERO PROPERTY: The product of 0 and any number is 0. 5 x 0 =0 0 rows of 5 cans = 0 cans. CONFIDENTIAL
