  2. 16th, 17th, and 18th Centuries • Cause of disease still not known – many people died from infections • Invention of the microscope allowed physicians to see disease-causing organisms. • Apothecaries led to development of pharmacies • First vaccination developed – smallpox

  3. 19th Century • Formal training for nurses began • Infection control developed once microorganisms were associated with disease • Viruses discovered in 1892 • Women became active participants in health care

  4. 20th Century • 1. Increased knowledge about the role of blood in the body • a. ABO blood groups discovered • b. Found out how white blood cells protect against disease

  5. 20th Century New machines developed: • Kidney Dialysis Machine 2. Heart Lung Machine

  6. 20th Century New medications developed: • Insulin discovered and used to treat diabetes 2. Antibiotics developed to fight infections 3. Vaccines developed
