WMO ETR Programme: Growing challenges We currently have • 27 WMO Regional Training Centres, a growing number of Regional Climate Centres, & many WMO affiliated institutions However, we also have • Changes in workforce numbers and roles • Some countries unable to fully train their staff • Expanding and new services • Increased demand for rigorous qualifications • Increasing focus on job competency • New training developments and delivery methods • Static or reducing budgets We still have a GAP between demand and supply of training Seeking ways to increase efficiency and reach

Curriculum Development Workshop for Climate Services • 21-25 November, Shfayim, Israel • Participants from WMO RTCs and WMO-affiliated institutions will work collaboratively to map ways to meet competencies for climate services • Examine existing courses and resources • Distill critical attributes to propagate forward into new projects • Identify new and potential projects that can meet the needs that remain. • Increase partnerships, coordination, and sharing • Develop a strategy for a distributed learning community for meeting ongoing, diverse learning needsC

Fellowships • Fellowships have been a critical part of WMO since 1965 • Each year, about 80 fellowships are actively helping to prepare NMHS staff members world-wide (Focus on LDCs) • Processes are in place for competitiveselection, and to monitor and support Fellows • Annualprogress • Post-fellowship reports (completion, 3 months, 8 months) • Online forum and library

Fellowships • The success of the WMO Fellowship Programme is due to the strength and diversity of partnerships. • Regional Training Centres (RTCs) • Universities • Ewha Womans University, Korea, Kyoto University, Japan, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, University of Hannover, Germany, University of Reading, UK • Attachment to National Meteorological Services • China Meteorological Administration (CMA) • US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

  9. Developing Training Capacity

WMO Global Campus – What is it, What could it be ? • A way of enhancing and elaborating how WMO Regional Training Centres and WMO affiliated institutions work, coordinate & collaborate to meet WMO members training needs • It’s NOT a physical building or physical campus • It’s also NOT about everything going on-line – different needs, different styles and methods • Some good collaborations already exist, so the goal is to build on this and learn from good practice to enhance and grow training offerings to meet this increasing demand and narrow the GAP…. • A feasibility study has been approved by EC and supported by Congress, and is now underway through the next financial period.
