  1. POWER OVER ETHERNET Explained..

  2. AGENDA • Introduction • Power over Ethernet Advantages • How PoE Works • Deploying PoE

  3. INTRODUCTION • Q: What is Power over Ethernet (PoE)? • A: It is the technology to send 48 volts DC power along with Ethernet data on 4 pair Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) or Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) cable.

  4. INTRODUCTION • Allows reliable DC power as well as data over existing LAN cabling, without modifying existing Ethernet infrastructure • Technology used by telecom industry to power traditional phones • Developed to provide lifeline quality power for IP telephony • Later expanded to broad range of devices

  5. POE =Power Over Ethernet • Implications of this technology • The RJ-45 connector has become the first universal worldwide power connector ! • No need for a power adaptor or “brick” at each telephone device

  6. THE STANDARD: IEEE 802.3af • Approved on 12 June 2003 • Supports familiar technologies: • the ubiquitous RJ-45 plug and outlet • Ethernet • Category 5 and better (10/100/1000 BaseT) • See http://www.ieee802.org/3/af/

  7. PoE ADVANTAGES Lower Costs • Eliminate the need to run A/C power wires • Reduces number of A/C power sockets • Utilise existing IT infrastructure investments • Ethernet cabling is everywhere, why not use it? More Flexible • Locate device where performance is optimum • Not constrained by the location of the AC outlet Centralise vs Localize Power Source • Allow use of a centralized UPS to guarantee power to the appliance even during mains power failure

  8. PoE ADVANTAGES Safer • No mains voltage anywhere Manageability • PoE devices that are Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) manageable can be remotely monitored and controlled • Efficiently manage or troubleshoot power consumption and/or failures

  9. EXAMPLES of Panasonic PoE Devices • NT300 VoIP Phones • SIP IP Phones • Future DECT Access Points • Panasonic IP Cameras • ETC

  10. HOW PoE WORKS Two Basic Components: • Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE): a device that supplies PoE power • Located in Telecom Room or similar space • Example: Power Patch Panel, Power Hub/Switch • Powered Device (PD): a device that receives and utilizes PoE type power • Located in the user area • Example: VoIP Phones, Wireless AP, IP Cameras

  11. HOW PoE WORKS How is power supplied? Via Data Pairs (Pins 3-6 and 1-2) Via Spare Pairs (Pins 4-5 and 7-8)

  12. HOW PoE WORKS How much power is available? • 48V DC • Maximum of 350mA sent to PD • Maximum Distance is 100m • ~13 Watts maximum power available (37V x 350mA = 12.95W) VoIP Phone 3-7 watts IP Camera 7-12 watts

  13. HOW PoE WORKS What if I plug in a non-PoE device? • Upon connection of any device, PSE “discovers” if device is PD or not • Ensures non-PoE compliant equipment is not given power Need Power? POE? Yes, Thanks. OK, Here you go. PSE Power Sourcing Equipment PDPower Device

  15. DEPLOYING PoE Some examples of PSE’s • End-Span • PoE Switch

  16. DEPLOYING PoE Types of Mid-Span • Power patch panel vs Power hub

  17. IN SUMMARY • PoE is designed to save time, money for customer • PoE can save substantial costs and install time for dealers • There is a need to power more products in the new future

  18. Thank You !
