  4. Greek Mythology! • A _______________ is a type of story that tries to explain things that are, or once were, _________________________ For example, myths might try to explain where the sky came from, how the universe was created, or why there are volcanoes.

  5. Myths were popular in ancient Greece. The ancient Greeks lived about 4,000 years ago! They used these stories to try to explain the world around them. Find Greece on the map below:

  6. Many Greeks were ________________________________, which means they believed in many different _____________________ and __________________________. These gods and goddesses were the main characters in many of their myths. You may recognize some of the gods and goddesses from the pictures below

  7. Mr. Abate’s Response This creation is very similar to the stories from Native American myths. Both myths try to explain the creation of the Earth and focus on nature. In the story of Gaea and Uranus, the Greeks explain the story that there is a relationship between the Earth and the sky in order to explain how the two are connected. Additionally, the story uses this relationship to explain other elements of nature that the Greeks could not explain without science, such as the creation of the sea. Some Native American myths are similar in that there is a “mother” Earth who provides for humans and that this mother Earth usually has some sort of relationship with the spirits in the sky. Both stories create characters out of the sky, the Earth, and other elements of nature in order to explain how each came to be.
