What is a Charter School? • Charter Schools in Wisconsin are public schools created through a businesslike contract or “charter” between the operators and the sponsoring school board. • Wisconsin law gives Charter Schools freedom from most state rules and regulations in exchange for greater accountability for results.

  4. Wisconsin Charter School Law • Must be open to all students; may not discriminate • Must follow all state and federal health and safety requirements of public schools • May not require any student to enroll • May not charge tuition

What is the Green Lake Global and Environmental Learning Community? • A unique learning opportunity for Green Lake’s 7th & 8th grade students • Linked with the community, the lake, the environment, and the world. • School will employ “Best Practices” in education • The curriculum framework will be IB MYP • Professional development for teachers • High accountability • All teachers will be licensed teachers

Facts about the School • Students will be members of the Green Lake School District • Participate in all extra curricular activities offered by the district • Participate in school-wide events • Will receive report cards • Curriculum will be standards-based • Students will take WKCE and other district wide assessments • All core subjects will be taught

Benefits of the School • Real-world problems will be addressed making the curriculum more relevant for the student • Transdisciplinary – Essential questions and themes • Connectedness • State of the art technology • 10 field experience days • Exploring one week campus stay; UW-Madison for research experience

According to The Partnership for 21st Century Skills • Every student in Wisconsin must be: • A critical thinker • A problem solver • An innovator • An effective communicator • An effective collaborator • A self-directed learner • Information and media literate • Globally aware • Civically engaged • The Green Lake Global and Environmental Learning Community will address these skills to prepare out students for the 21st Century!

  12. How can my student attend? • Enrollment prior to May 1 • Lottery system if more than 20 students enroll • Enrollment application form is available on the Green Lake School District website. Can be submitted online. • Enrollment application form is also available in the Green Lake School District office • If student is not a current Green Lake resident student an open enrollment application must be filed between Feb. 4 – 22, 2008.
