  2. CWP Essential Questions: Globalization These are the Essential Questions of the course. Please create a space in your notebook to keep track of them. They will show up in your tests and quizzes: • What is a Global Issue? • What issues does the USA currently face? • What is Globalization? • What are the pros/cons or costs/benefits of globalization? • What competitive advantages does the USA have over other nations and how does that affect our international relationships?

  3. 9/10: Current Issues facing the USA • Make a list of three important global issues facing the USA right now. Make sure they conform to the criteria we learned yesterday.

September 11, 2013 • What do you remember about 9/11/01: • Where were you when you learned about the terrorist attacks? • How has your life been affected by these attacks since 2001? • Who was responsible for the attacks? • What did the USA do in response to the attacks? • What should the USA do to prevent future attacks by foreign terrorists on US soil?

  5. 9/12/13: Why is the USA a target for terrorism? • According to the video, Terrorism and the US, why has the USA been a target for foreign terrorism? • Who are Hezbollah and al Qaeda? • What has the USA done to protect itself from foreign terrorism?

  7. 9/16/13: What is Globalization? • According to Thomas Friedman, what is globalization? • What affects will globalization have on you as an American consumer and worker? • How do you feel about globalization as described by Friedman?

  8. DW 9/19/13: What are the costs & benefits of Globalization? • Today you will role play as members of a WTO protest like we saw in the video. Please get ready to read dramatically for the class. • What are the Costs of Globalization? • What are the benefits of Globalization?

  9. 9/23/13: No Daily Writing • No Daily Writing today. Who did not get their picture taken? • Instead take a few minutes to look over your notebooks. • Have you completed all of the daily writing assignments? • Did you get the score you wanted on Quiz One? • Are all the assignments you completed graded? • Did you include a heading on all assignments? • Did you answer all questions using complete sentences and including the questions in the answers? • Is there anything you want to improve? • All turned in notebook work should be graded now. Let me know about problems.

  14. 10/3/13 DW: Ugly Side of Free Trade • Please take out your assignment from last night • What is your reaction to reading the article from last night? • What questions do you have about the issue or the article? • What additional information do you want to have to understand the “ugly side of free trade?”

DW 10/7/13: Reflect on “A Way of Life…” • Today you will reflect on your article reading from the weekend, “A Way of Life is Ending…” • What is your reaction to this article? • Compare your reaction to this article to your reaction to the previous article on sweatshops. Does this new information change the way you feel about sweatshops? • Do you have any ideas about how the global community can continue to help the very poor? • What questions do you have?

  16. Assignment 10/7/13 • Today’s assignment is independent article research. • This week you will be writing a brief essay on the pros and cons of globalization. You will need to use at least one article that you find online. • Please use Google, the New York Times, BBC News, or another news source to locate an article on either the pros or cons (costs or benefits) of globalization. Be sure to keep in mind that people in the MEDCs have different needs. • Keywords: Globalization pros and cons, Globalization outsourcing, Globalization negatives or benefits, Globalization sweatshops.

  17. 10/8/13 • NO DAILY WRITING TODAY. • Please take out the article you found yesterday and begin to work on your Article Summary & Response assignment. This will be due at 9:35. • At 9:35 I will introduce your unit assessment assignment, a multi-paragraph essay in which you will evaluate and analyze the costs and benefits of globalization.

  18. 10/10/13: Today’s assignment • NO DAILY WRITING • Today you have the period to FINISH your unit assessment assignment (essay). • We may not have any access to laptops today as we are MAP testing. • Please organize or outline your ideas on paper then FINISH drafting your essay. • Use as many articles (at least 3) as you need to be super successful. • Assessment Essay is due at the end of the period today. Please turn in your assignments and notebooks at the end of the period.

  19. DW 10/14/13: Human Rights • How do you define the term Human Rights? • What are the five most important rights you think all humans are entitled to? • Whose responsibility is it to enforce human rights and how is this job done? • What thoughts or concerns do you have about human rights?

DW 10/15/13: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights • Summary and Review: • Why was the UDHR written? • What are the two main principles of the UDHR? • What major categories divide the UDHR? • Reflection: • What are some weaknesses or problems with applying the UDHR to national law? • How is the UDHR enforced? • How should the United States use the UDHR?

  21. 10/15/13 Assignment 1: Pair-Share • At your table groups choose a partner to discuss your answers with. • Share your answers with your partner then listen to their responses. • As a pair come up with answers for the final two reflection questions from daily write: • What are some weaknesses or problems with applying the UDHR to national law?How is the UDHR enforced? • How should the United States use the UDHR? • Be prepared to share your answers with the larger group.

  22. 10/15 Assignment 2: Reading the UDHR • Read your copy of the UDHR. • Answer these questions in your notebook: • Which rights are the most important to you (Choose 3)? Explain why they are important to you. • Are you surprised by any of the rights outlined in the UDHR? Explain. • Which of the rights in the UDHR do we NOT have in the USA? • Share your responses with your partner. • Next Assignment is “Human Rights in the Headlines”

  23. 10/18: Assignment • Please take out your copy of the UDHR. • Today we are going to apply the articles of the UDHR to newspaper headlines. • You will need a copy of the assignment Human Rights in the Headlines. • For each news headline figure out which UDHR article might be used to resolve the issue. • There may be more than one headline.

  24. DW 10/21: Spending money • What would you buy if you had the following amounts of money: • $200 • $1000 • $2500 • How do you think a poor person in a LEDC would spend those amounts of money?

DW 10/21: Global Mall Shopping Assignment • How did it feel to see what you could and could not afford at the Global Mall? • What would your life be like if you could not afford to go to school? • How would it feel to have to choose between food and health care? • Where does the average American family fall on the Global Mall Item list?

DW 10/28: PoliSci 202 • Next term I am teaching a WCC class here on campus called PoliSci 202, American Government. • This class will satisfy your 11th grade Government requirement. • It should count as a 1.0 (an entire year) of credit. • It will be more difficult than the high school level class and will require significant work outside the classroom. • This work will take the form of reading, note-taking and writing. • Please Let me know in your notebooks if you are interested in taking this class. • What questions do you have about it? • Would you rather take Psychology or Ceramics as an elective next term?

  27. DW 10/24 The United Nations • Please turn in the assignment from yesterday’s lesson on economic systems • What is the United Nations? • What is the mission or Goal of the UN? • What are the six main bodies of the UN? • What kinds of things does the UN do?

  28. Quiz on Economic Systems • What are the three economic systems we learned about yesterday. • For each one describe its relationship to liberty and/or equity. • Which economic system is prevalent in the US? Explain why you think this is true.

  29. DW 10/29: the MDG and Slums • What images come to mind when you hear the word “slum”? • What do you know about slums here in this country? • What do you know about slums in other parts of the world? • If you were to make up a list of factors that characterize a slum, what would you include?

  30. DW 10/30: Millennium Development Goals • List as many of the 8 Millennium Development Goals as you can. • Recall the article on Kibera that you read yesterday. How many of the goals are the people of Kibera deficient in? • Compare the life of an average Kibera resident to the life of an average Ferndale resident.

  31. Kibera: Slum Life, Jigsaw activity • You will be given one of three different articles on slum life in Kibera. • Read your article. As you do answer the following questions: • Describe the life of people living in the Kibera slum. • What needs of the people are not being met? • What basic needs are being met sufficiently? • What human rights do these people have that are not being honored? • What solutions are suggested in your article? • When you are finished with reading you will discuss your article at your table. Come up with group answers. Each student needs a copy.

DW 10/31: Kibera Articles • Happy Halloween! • Take out the article you read last night. • If you completed your homework, and answered the questions, do this daily write. • If you did not do this assignment, work on it now. • DW Questions: • Summarize the article you read last night. Use only 3-5 sentences. • What solutions to these problems can you think of?

  33. 11/1: Assignment Finish Kibera Jigsaw • Get into your numbered groups. There should be three people in each group. • Questions for the small groups: • Share a summary of your article with your group. • Share the group answers for your article. • While you are listening take notes on the other person’s article. • Prepare 2-3 questions for the person sharing the article. Ask the questions. • Each person will prepare a single Summary & Response for all three Kibera articles as if it were only one article. There should be information in the summary from all three sources. You will only need one citation: add all three titles together.

  34. 11/4/13: Plan for today’s class • Work on Kibera articles summary and response(s) • #1 Into Kibera • #2 Jigsaw articles • Conference individually with Chris about grades

  35. DW 11/5: Solutions for Kibera • How do you imagine the people of Kibera feel about living in the slum there? • Please think about solutions to the problems of the Kibera slum. • If you had $1 billion what would you do to fix the many problems? Come up with at least two solutions.

Discussion questions for Good Fortune • Choose one of these questions to answer in your notebook: • If you could ask one person in the film one question, who and what would it be? • Describe a moment or scene in the film that you found particularly disturbing or moving. What was it about that scene that was especially compelling for you? • Which character do you identify with the most and why?

DW 11/7: Aiding Kibera/Kenya • What are the most important questions you could ask to understand the problems of Kenya’s poor and their solutions? • If you could give advice to Calvin Burgess before he started Dominion Farms, what would it be? • Is there ever a time when it is ok to expect small numbers of people like Jackson

DW 11/7: International Aid and Paternalism • Definition: Paternalism • A policy or practice of treating or governing people in a fatherly manner, especially by providing for their needs without giving them rights or responsibilities. • Questions: • Where in the film Good Fortune do you see examples of paternalism? • Do you think this paternalism is motivated by a desire to help or to take advantage of the poor for personal gain? • What is a good alternative to this paternalism?
