  3. Where are the Highlands?

  4. Why did Highlanders leave? • Many had left in the 1830s and new leavers could stay with them • Cold and wet climate meant growing food was difficult • The Highland population was growing – not enough resources for everyone Ruined crofts

  5. Many depended on potatoes – potato blight came to Highlands in 1840s • Landowners evicted and moved people • After WWI, the fishing industry lost overseas markets • Farming machines replaced people - unemployment

  7. Highland landlords cared more about profit than anything else • They evicted or moved people to make way for sheep etc • Some were better – some landlords paid for their tenants to emigrate
