  1. Paragraph Writing A Five Step Process

  2. Topic Sentence • First sentence of your paragraph • Should answer the question posed • e.g. Ged faces internal conflict when he must defeat the shadow.

  3. Quotation • Any text you pull from the work to support your opinion • Should have a “lead in”; a word or phrase that connects the quote to the previous sentence • Should be correctly cited • This is revealed when Ged says to Ogion, “Master, I go hunting” (LeGuin 78).

  4. Commentary Statements • At least two sentences that follow the quotation and explain why the quotation proves the topic sentence • e.g. (1) At first, Ged is afraid of the shadow and struggles within himself. (2) However, once he learns how to conquer his fears, he is able to face them and hunt the shadow.

  5. Conclusion • “Sums up” the paragraph and makes a final statement that clarifies your point • e.g. Ged therefore faces internal conflict as he struggles with his responsibility for the shadow.
