  3. Social Enterprises in Hong Kong What is Social Enterprise ? • It is an on-going business generating income, a viable business • It has a social objective i.e. assisting people with disabilities and the socially disadvantaged in employment and training

  4. 3.It has a profit (income less expenditure) but the profit will not be distributed to shareholders and it will be used as funds for creating another social enterprise

  5. Development of Social Enterprisesin Hong Kong Rehabilitation of People with Disabilities (PWD) • Providing training and employment opportunities

  6. Difficulties encountered by PWD • High unemployment rate, about 22% • Society’s stigma and prejudice vs PWD • High turnover of employed PWD due to various reasons such as adjustment problem

  7. Non-acceptance by colleagues, inadequate support from peers etc. • One way/means to tackle the employment issue of PWD is to create jobs i.e. provides both training and employment opportunities so the 1st social enterprise was set up as early as January 1994. At that time, we call it Simulated Business i.e. a business in a real work situation
