The Case for Adoption Funding 153,000,000 children worldwide and 400,000 in the U.S. are growing up without families. • 18 million children overseas and 25% of the children in foster care need a family right now • Given 250,000 adoptions a year the probability of being adopted isonly1½ % The impact of inaction is heartbreaking. Children without families experience poor life outcomes at predictable and alarming rates. Gift of Adoption Fund provides the final funds to complete the adoption process, uniting more children with safe, permanent and loving families. 2

GOA Helps the Most Vulnerable Children Around the World • Gift of Adoption prioritizes the most vulnerable children in its grant making: • Sibling groups (15%) and older children (13%) • Children with unmet medical needs (36%) • Children entering foster care unnecessarily (15%) • Economic and Adoption trends are affecting these children the most. • Increasingly, children available for adoption internationally are older or in need of medical care but the process is lengthier and more costly. • After steadily declining by 20 percent between 2005 and 2012, the number of children in foster care increased in FY2014 by 5%. GOA grantees are military families, teachers, social workers, clergy, etc., with an approved home study from an accredited adoption agency, a waiting child, and a demonstrated financial need for the final funds needed to close the adoption. They have committed to moving a child from a life of uncertainty to one that will provide stability and love. They are assuming the responsibility and cost of raising and loving a child, but the upfront adoption costs have created a financial barrier between their homes and their children. 3

  4. It’s Time for a New Philanthropic Priority GOA does not create adoption. We work with the parents, adoption agencies, and lawyers to provide the final funds needed to complete adoptions. However, for every grant we fund, we still must turn away two. And, every time we enter a new state, applications from that state increase. The need clearly exists. You don’t need to adopt to give a child a family. Adoption Assistance grants are a win-win on a humanitarian and economic level, greatly reducing the probability of homelessness, poverty, mental illness and reliance on government support while simultaneously releasing the full potential of a child.
