  1. What is an Animal Cell?

  2. Animal Cell • Last week, we spent a lot of time talking about plant cells. This week, we will begin to talk about animal cells. We will be making some comparisons between the two types of cells. • We already know that animal cells and plant cells share many of the same organelles. • But plant cells have some organelles that animal cells do not.

  3. Here's a quick review of some of the organelles they share. Cell Organelles

  4. Let's Recap! • Who can name some of the organelles in a plant cell? • O • O • O • O • O

  5. On to the Animal Cell Let's talk about the animal cell and its organelles.

  6. Cell Membrane • Cell Membrane: The cell membrane is a thin, flexible layer around the cells of all living things. Its basic job is to separate the inside of the cells from the outside.

  7. Selectively Permeable • What does selectively permeable mean? • A property of cellular membranes that only allows certain molecules to enter or exit the cell. This is important for the cell to maintain homeostasis.

  8. Cytoplasm • A gel or jelly-like substance found in all cells. • Where inside the cell would we never find cytoplasm? • The NUCLEUS!

  9. Ribosomes • The protein builders of the cell.

  10. Nucleus • The BRAIN of the cell.

  11. Nucleolus • A large structure inside thenucleus that makesribosomes.

  12. Endoplasmic Reticulum • ER functions as a manufacturing and highway system. • There are two components of ER. • Rough ER has ribosomes. • Smooth ER does not have ribosomes.

  13. Golgi Apparatus • Processes proteins inside of the cell.

  14. Mitochondria • The powerhouse of the cell.

  15. Lysosomes • The digestive system (or stomach) of the cell.

  16. Vacuole • The storage closet of the cell. • What is the primary difference between vacuoles in plant and animal cells? • Plant cells have one large vacuole while animal cells have several smaller vacuoles.
