4. 2.Think and Search/Pulling it Together • Think and Search involves a question that has an answer in the text, but this answer requires information from more than sentence or paragraph. • These questions are still based on the memory of the text. • However, the answers are usually in more than one place. • This requires the reader to assemble information.

7. 3. Author/Text and You • To answer this kind of question students have to use • What the author told you • Plus what you already know • This requires connections to the text T-S T-T T-W(background knowledge) And/or Make an inference

9. 4. On Your Own • The student needs to use his own ideas to answer the question. • This means searching for the answer in your own background knowledge/schema. • Example: “What would you do if you found the dog?”

Summary points • Knowing the type of question being asked will help you to figure out the answer. • Also knowing that “meaty” or deep questions are either Think and Search, Author and You, or On Your Own types will help you to create better questions. • Questioning is an excellent reading strategy.
