Working theses • EU presidency increases the visibility of Europe and enhances the sense of shared belonging in the presiding member state; • EU presidency opens up the space for the member state to qualitatively contribute to the European model of society (Delanty and Rumford) by pushing fresh agenda and leading an initiative; • (public) mass media take the opportunity of the presidency to broaden public awareness of/knowledge on presidency agenda (i.e., environmental issues, intercultural dialogue).

  7. The Slovenian EUP (SEUP) • A time of scandals (the hotel PR “delivery”; Rupel/US/EU; Janša/Socrates; Janša/Sarkozy; Rupel/Mesić; plagiarism (Janša/Blair/Masaryk?)) • “Eurospectacular function” of the SEUP: contests over media coverage of the presidency.

  12. Afterthoughts: • Democratic deficit (Shore 2006) or the state of European democracy? • The role of mass media? • The condition of the fiction?
