  3. INTRODUCTION Explaining what your essay is about. Try to pinpoint which type of reason you think was most important. • REASONS WHY THE NORMANS WERE SUCCESSFUL • Write 3 paragraphs, or chunks… • Explain reasons to do with luck • Explain reasons to do with skill • Explain reasons to do with preparation and resources CONCLUSION Sum up why YOU think the Normans were able to conquer England. What was the most important reason, and why? THE ESSAY BURGER!

STEP ONE – Writing the filling • 1 LEAVE A SPACE of about 10 lines max for your introduction (we’ll do that later). • 2 Now write a ‘chunk’ explaining the reasons to do with luck. • You could start like this…. • Some of the reasons why the Normans were able to conquer England were to do with luck. For example…… • Try to explain 2 different luck reasons in your chunk • explain, in as much detail as you can why each reason made Harold lose/William win • Time allowed: 10-15 minutes

  5. What makes a tasty filling? Here’s a fabulous example of a chunk to do with luckreasons…. Some of the reasons why the Normans were successful were to do with luck. For example, the Normans were lucky that the wind direction changed when it did. At first, the Normans had to wait to set sail to England, because the wind was blowing in the wrong direction. This wind helped Harald of Norway invade first. The English beat Norway at the battle of Stamford Bridge, but this meant they were really tired by the time the wind direction changed. When the Normans invaded the English had less chance of winning because they were tired and had lost their best fighters in the first battle. Another reason to do with luck is that King Harold of England was killed at the Battle of Hastings. This meant that…. Can you pick out what makes this chunk so good?

  6. REALLY IMPORTANT IF YOU WANT TO GET A LEVEL 6! Some of the reasons why the Normans were successful were to do with luck.For example…….(one example is explained). Another reason to do with luck isthat the Normans were lucky that the wind direction changed when it did. At first, the Normans had to wait to set sail to England, because the wind was blowing in the wrong direction. This wind helped Harald of Norway invade first. The English beat Norway at the battle of Stamford Bridge, but this meant they were really tired by the time the wind direction changed. When the Normans invaded the English had less chance of winning because they were tired and had lost their best fighters in the first battle. William’s fighters, however, were able to get plenty of rest while they were waiting for the English army to return from York. William could have marched his army towards London instead of waiting, but this could have been disastrous for the Normans. Some of the reasons why the Normans were successful were to do with skill and tactics. If William had marched north to London, then….. See how one paragraph flows into the next? I have connected my paragraph about luck to my paragraph about skill reasons. When I’ve finished writing about skill reasons, I’ll try to connect my paragraph about skill to my paragraph about resources/ preparation.

If you do, please make sure you print it out for the due date.
