  2. Definition of movement • The symbolist movement is a mixture of Romanticism and modernism. Desiring to go beyond the limits of common material which derived from Romantic poets, symbolists took the limits in a moral and cultural decline and arousing direction.

  3. What is Symbolism? • Symbolism is the practice or art of using an object or a word to represent an abstract idea. An action, person, place, word, or object can all have a symbolic meaning. When an author wants to suggest a certain mood or emotion, he can also use symbolism to hint at it.

  4. Origins • The Symbolist movement was developed by Stephane Mallarme and Paul Verlaine during the 1860s and '70s • In the 1880s, the set of principles was articulated by a series of declarations and attracted a generation of writers •  The name "symbolist" itself was first created by the Jean Moreas, who invented the term to distinguish the symbolists from the related decadents of literature and of art

  5. Techniques and Themes • Liberated versification in order to allow greater “fluidity” • Their attempts were to evoke rather than describe • Symbolic imagery was used to signify the state of the poet’s soul • poets sought to identify and confound the separate senses of scent, sound, and color • Sometimes used with Decadence which is behavior reflecting a decline • Some notable poets such as Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot used a technique called Imagism which is precision of imagery and clear, sharp language • sought to convey individual emotional experience through the subtle, suggestive use of highly metaphorical language • relied on myth, mood, and atmosphere to reveal only indirectly the deeper truths of existence • opposed ideas of naturalism and realism • Synesthesia- used to refer to artistic and poetic devices which attempt to express a linkage between the senses

  6. Arthur Symons • Born February 28, 1865 – January 22, 1945 • Poet, critic, and magazine editor • Suffered a psychotic breakdown in 1909 and in 1930 • Wrote a book called Confessions: A study in pathology, which had a moving description of his breakdown and treament • Notable works- A Winter’s Night, Amends to Nature, Airs for the Lutte, and An Ending • Poem- Perfume

Alfred Prufrock

  9. Oscar Wilde • Oscar FingalO'Flahertie Wills Wilde (16 October 1854 – 30 November 1900) • Oscar Wilde is best known for his plays, epigrams, and his imprisonment  • An epigram is a brief, interesting, memorable, and sometimes surprising or satirical statement. • He became into a rising philosophy which was called Aestheticism which is related to symbolism  • Aestheticism is is an art movement supporting the emphasis of aesthetic values more than socio-political themes for for literature music and fine arts. • Oscar Wilde was imprisoned for two years of hard labor in prison for Gross Indecency which led to his premature death • Notable works- SelentiumAmoris, Desespoir- The New Remose • Poem- Chanson

  10. AP Writing Prompts • The symbolist movement often sought to convey individual emotional experience through the subtle, suggestive use of highly metaphorical language. Write an essay identifying poems that used symbolic techniques and analyzing the features of the poem as to why it is considered to be created by a symbolist. • In the symbolist movement, authors commonly used techniques that relied on myth, mood, and atmosphere to reveal only indirectly the deeper truths of existence.
