  2. What is 5S? • Five LEAN disciplines applied anywhere in the workplace • Sort • Straighten • Shine • Standardize • Sustain

  3. 5S – Continuous Improvement

  4. Why 5S? • Benefits: Personal & Organization • Provides an opportunity to clear, clean and organize both personal & common workspace • Results: Smooth operations, motivated employees and a sense of pride in accomplishing a group task. • This in an opportunity!!!

  5. What is your role? • Everyone is participating • 5S personal workspace mandatory • Assist with common workspaces (project files, kitchens, copy & supply rooms, storage areas) • If time allows, computer workspace

  6. What does clean mean? • Review ALL files, folders, drawers, hanging memos, even food storage areas in your office - Sort • Designate as “Original” or “Copy” and follow UW procedures & guidelines - Straighten • Wipe down shelves, desk & floor areas - Shine • Consistently do it for everything - Standardize • Repeat practices in future – Sustain • Remain calm, work hard & use common sense - Safety

  7. Safety Reminders • Use a stool or step ladder for cleaning high shelves & windows • Ask for help to carry or move heavy items • Check and untangle computer cords, plugs and electrical outlets. *Report any potential hazards.

  8. Added Safety Benefits • Improved fire & earthquake safety • Dust free environment • Sanitized offices

Local Results(FS Admin Building) • Examples of “stuff” found 36 boxes of paper for shredding, 14 boxes for archives, 5 extra file cabinets, 35 boxes of used binders, 350 pads of expired time cards, 1000 extra plastic forks, leave forms from 1998, financial reports from 1971, a plastic lobster and typewriter cleaner from 1953!!

  10. What happens to all the stuff? • Not everything is trash • Recycle, repurpose & share: communicate with your neighbors • Designated sharing areas, extra recycling buckets and shredding bins will be provided

  14. What do I need to do? • Reserve February 29th on your calendars • Use the entire day to 5S • Wear comfortable clothes & shoes • Help your neighbors • Be prepared for anything • Give suggestions to event leaders • Smile & have fun (there might be prizes)!!
