  2. Habit # 1 - Proactivity • As human beings we are responsible for our lives. • Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions.

  3. Characteristics of Proactive People • They do not blame circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. • Their behavior is a product of their own conscious choice.

  4. Reactive Language There’s nothing I can do. That’s just the way I am. He makes me so mad. They won’t allow that. I have to do that. I can’t. I must. If only. Proactive Language Let’s look at our alternatives. I can choose a different approach. I control my own feelings. I can create an effective presentation. I will choose an appropriate response. I choose. I prefer. I will. Proactive vs. Reactive

  5. Determinism Genetic Determinism – Your grandparents did this to you. Psychic Determinism – Your parents did it to you. Environmental Determinism – Your surroundings did this to you.

  6. Victor Frankl • If you have a why, you can live through any what.

  7. Exercise Think about a frustrating situation that you have experienced. List two ways that you could deal with the situation in a REACTIVE manner and two ways that you could deal with the situation in a PROACTIVE manner.
