Bird (NHMFL-FSU), DMR 0603042 Research:Cable-in-Conduit Conductors usingNb3Snare critical to the development of the NHMFL’s Series-Connected Hybrid as well as ITER. Thermal expansion mis-match between the conduit and the Nb3Sn wire is of critical importance to the performance of these systems. The NHMFL has characterized the physical properties of various potential conduit materials both for our magnets and for ITER. In particular, a new multi-functional probe has been designed and built for an existing physical property measurement system (PPMS). With this probe, thermal expansions of Nb3Sn and a new Japanese Fe-Mn alloy called JK2LB at low temperatures were measured by an extensometer. Measurements of stainless steel 316LN will be performed in the near future. Fig. 1 is a picture of the probe. Fig.2 shows the measured thermal expansion of brass, Nb3Sn and JK2LB. J. Lu, et al.,

Bird (NHMFL-FSU), DMR 0603042 Broader Impacts: Julio Sosa is an undergraduate student at FSU who works part-time in materials development and characterization at the NHMFL. He was responsible for the implementation of a custom thermal-expansion measurement system for a dilatometer. He retro-fitted a low temperature cryostat into a commercial high-temperature system and designed and implemented mechanical interface features and instrumentation. Dr. Steven T. Downey, II received his Ph.D. from FSU in 2008 undertaking research on low-carbon 316LN stainless steel suitable for the conduit alloys in the Series-Connected Hybrid. Daniel Brown is a 2nd year physics undergraduate at Wabash College who came to the NHMFL as part of the REU program. While here he developed the probe for thermal expansion measurements of JK2LB, Nb3Sn and stainless steel using a PPMS. Julio Sosa Steven Downey Daniel Brown
