  8. Research internship • Mandatory part of the master Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  9. Internship: place in curriculum  Period 1:  Period 2:  Period 3: 2 courses 2 courses Academic Skills & Research proposal Then:  RESEARCH INTERNSHIP    if prerequisites are met    From Period 4 (February) to ~July Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  10. What is the research internship? Students are required to conduct a research project that involves: 1) planning, 2) conducting, and 3) analyzing the results of the student’s own research project. This work will result in an individually written 4) master’s thesis (in English). Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  11. 1) Planning • The full empiric cycle will be followed • The student comes up with his/ her own research question; • In case of a duo internship, both students should formulate and investigate their own research question. • In case of participation in ongoing research, the student also formulates his/her own research question. • The research question must be a scientific question that can be answered within the research project. Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  12. 2) Conducting • The extent of the internship should be in accordance with the number of EC (~ 40 EC total for internship; 1 EC = 28 hours) • You preferably test participants. If not possible, data must be at least originating from participants (e.g., in research with databases, questionnaire research, existing image and sound material). • If this is neither possible (e.g., a meta–analysis), more emphasis must be put on one or more other parts of the empirical cycle (e.g., more advanced statistics, and/or more background/ introduction to the topic, leading to the research question). Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  13. 2) Conducting cont’d • The number of participants is preferably related to the power calculation in the research • But should not be a leading criterion for a good research internship. • The number of participants should be scientifically valuable yet also practically doable within the time frame of the internship. The student has to make efforts to reach the desirable number. • This accounts for a minimum number of participants, but also for a maximum number of participants. Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  14. 3) Analyzing • Statistics should be in accordance with the research design: students must be able to answer the research question/ hypotheses with corresponding, adequate statistical methods. • Accordingly, different statistical methods are used in qualitative and quantitative research, respectively. Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  15. 4) Master’s thesis • The master’s thesis should be individually written, in the English language. • The master’s thesis needs to meet both the formal guidelines (e.g., length between 7000- 9000 words) and the content guidelines. • See also the handbook writing skills and the factsheet for supervisors for these guidelines. Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  16. When and where? When:  From period 4 onward (February-July)  40 EC:  Research Proposal:  Internship:  Master thesis:  Start searching in time. Orientation starts around today 5 EC (Period 3) 25 EC 10 EC Where:  Maastricht University, with one of the staff members  External institute in the Netherlands, (e.g., other university)  External institute abroad (e.g., university abroad) Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  17.   When you have found a topic and 2 supervisors: Fill out the application form • Online (new) • 1 month before the start of the internship (December) Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  18. Find the application form:  Application form research internship: http://go.askpsy.nl/internship Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  19. Application form • is NOT the contract! • The application form is necessary to make the contract • Students submit application form online • Supervisors and student receive emails to check info • Supervisors and student receive contract Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  20. Internship contract  Important!  Your internship should be legal  Have you met all requirements?  Your internship is insured  No application form = no contract = no valid internship = no EC Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  21. Assessment of master thesis • You need 2 supervisors • 1 is always from FPN • 1st supervisor has PhD degree (or is advanced phd student) In external institute:  If supervisor there has PhD degree:  Then he/she is/can be the 1st supervisor.  You need a second assessor from FPN Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  22. External research internship / abroad • Interesting! Good for your academic development, • But also realize: • Start searching in time, especially when going abroad • You must also find a UM Faculty supervisor, who is willing and able to supervise your topic • Find out whether you can receive (sufficient) supervision from someone with a PhD degree at external institute Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  23. Going abroad for internship? Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  24. The International Relations Office (IRO) Staff: Merlijne van Overbruggen, Ellen Blaauw, Debbie Bloot •The IRO offers scholarships and provides support on practical matters related to an internship abroad E.g. general advice on housing, insurance, language preparation, etc. •The IRO doesn’t have formal agreements for internship purposes, nor a list of internship options. The IRO cannot mediate in finding an internship abroad. Always get in touch with your internship coordinator, to discuss how to proceed. Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  25. Scholarships Scholarships through the IRO:  Erasmus+ scholarship (EU). Limited budget! Excluded: Switzerland, internship in home country Erasmus+ zero-grant status possible, e.g. to be exempted from (tuition) fees  FPN scholarship (non-EU)  Language course scholarship Check EleUM for the application form, requirements and deadlines! Other scholarships? Check Student Funding Portals, e.g. www.beursopener.nl, www.european-funding-guide.eu. Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  26. Visa matters • To find out if/which visa you need, consult the website of your host country's embassy for the most up-to-date visa application procedure. For information on embassies, visa, vaccinations http://www.minbuza.nl/. • It’s your responsibility to apply for a visa through the embassy. Visa regulations are subject to change and may differ per student (e.g. due to nationality, duration of stay). • Check whether your host university (IRO/visa office) can provide assistance. • Start to apply and to arrange the necessary documents in time! The rules are strict, especially for entering the US, Canada, the UK (especially for non-EU students)! Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  27. Insurance matters • Make sure to arrange adequate health/liability insurance. Consult your insurance company to find out whether you are sufficiently covered. • Your host institution is responsible for concluding a liability insurance. The UM provides a back-up liability insurance. Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  28. Housing matters How to find housing abroad?  Check the website of your host institution;  Contact your host university's IRO/housing office;  Read the essays of former interns (or contact them by e-mail to ask for tips);  Check http://www.wilweg.nl/stage/voorbereiding/huisvesting;  Check www.housinganywhere.com Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  29. Important notes! • Enquire with your host institution whether they charge tuition/service fees for visiting students (e.g. interns). Exemptions may be possible for EU students by registering for the so-called 'Erasmus + Traineeship scheme'. • -->Please ask advice from IRO in case of unexpected/ unforeseen fees • You have to remain registered and pay tuition fees to UM throughout your entire studies (incl. internship period). No valid registration = No validation (ECTS) of your internship! Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  30. More information/Questions?  More information? Check EleUM > FPN Students general > International Relations Office > Research internship abroad and read the essays of former interns who did an internship abroad.  Questions? Contact the IRO through: - AskPsy; - Appointment through the FPN Service Desk Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  36. Rules & Regulations (OER) • Dr. Hanneke van Mier Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  37. The master’s study programme is offered on a full-time basis, this refers also to the internship. For most specialisations: internship + master’s thesis = 35 credits => 24-25 weeks (Febr-July) When you have to start later with your internship or when you cannot work fulltime on your internship/thesis, you will graduate later. Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  38. Requirements internship - The internship can only be started when at least 8 credits of the core courses from period 1 and 2 are passed. - Certain internships may require that practical or skill training(s) have been completed. If you deviate from the above without permission from the Board of Examiners, the result of the part in question can be declared invalid. Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  39. Important At least a month before you start your internship you have to fill out the internship application form. When you meet the requirements for the internship a contract will be made up, which is signed by all parties. If you don’t apply for the internship, it will be considered illegal, and can be declared invalid. Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  40. When can you start the internship? At the earliest at the start of period 4 (when at least 8 credits have been obtained) (except combined internship NP) In all other cases the internship starts at the first of the month after which 8 credits have been obtained. If you start the internship without having fulfilled the require- ments, it will be considered illegal, and declared invalid. Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  41. When you want to start your internship in February, make sure you pass at least 2-3 courses at the first attempt. We are aware that arrangements about the internship might need to be made in advance. When discussing the starting date of your internship with supervisor and/or institute keep in mind that the start of the internship is dependent on having obtained 8 credits. Discuss this with your supervisor. Although a contract might be made up before exam results are known, it will only be valid when 8 credits have been obtained. There will be a contingency in the contract. Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  42. Grading of parts of internship(s) Research proposal: pass/fail (1st and 2nd supervisor) Research internship: graded (1st supervisor) 10 credits included in GPA Master’s thesis: graded (1st and 2nd supervisor) NP: Clinical internship: pass/fail (supervisor institute) Clinical activities report: graded (faculty supervisor) Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  43. Requirements (Summa) Cum Laude A weighted grade point average (GPA) of at least 8.00/9.00 for all parts of the master ‘s examination • • A weighted average of at least 8.00/9.00 for the courses offered in period 1 and 2 All assessments must have been passed on the first attempt • All courses/modules need to be passed within the year the master was started (except internship) • Masters thesis (and if applicable, Clinical Activities report): a score of at least 8.0/9.0 • Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  44. Requirements master’s thesis • A Master’s thesis is an independently written report of the research which has been conducted during the internship. • The Master’s thesis is an individually* written paper. • The final grade needs to be at least a 6.0. • Will be assessed by first (supervisor) and second assessor. • Grade of the first and second assessor will be averaged and both need to be sufficient, and can not differ more than 2.0 points. * means that when you do an internship with a fellow student, each will have to formulate a different research question and no overlap is allowed for the introduction and discussion. Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  45. In order to graduate this academic year (August 31st), your last work (usually the master thesis) must be submitted for assessment at the latest on August 31st (be aware of vacation supervisor). Important: this final version must be emailed to the educational office (fdp-masterthese@maastrichtuniversity.nl) at the latest August 31st, and to both supervisors in CC. In case you want to do a second master, make sure to hand in your thesis well before the end of August (supervisor, 2nd assessor and EO), so your thesis will be assessed at the latest on August 31st. Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  46. Your supervisors must send in the assessment at the latest on September 27th.  When you receive a pass, you will graduate per August 31st.  If you receive a fail (or emailed your final thesis after August 31st), you will have to register again for the master, and you will get 1 chance to rewrite your thesis.  Send a copy of the revised thesis to the EO. For more information see AskPsy.nl Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  47. To be invited for the diploma ceremony end of November/ beginning of December 2018, you need to turn in the final version of your thesis at the latest September 30th, 2018, and pass this version. Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  48. Assessment Criteria Master Internship The practical part of the master internship is assessed on several criteria. Assessors shall not mark all criteria (not all criteria might be applicable,) and might indicate those criteria that are noticeable (poor/unsatisfactory or good/very good), to provide the student with helpful information. – – = poor; – = unsatisfactory; +/– = borderline; + = sufficient, ++ = good; +++ = very good, NA = not applicable. Note that the outcome is not simply the sum of pluses and minuses. Practical Skills Accuracy/precision Planning (realisation time schedule) Organisational skills Data analysis Level of independence Taking initiative Communication Processing of feedback Attitude Commitment Dedication Collaboration Collegiality Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  49. Assessment Criteria Master Thesis Writing product Quality of abstract Introduction and description of research question/hypothesis Creativity and originality of research question Theoretical understanding Structure and organization of the thesis Critical and innovative approach to research Design and methods are conform research question Understanding and description of statistical analysis Adequacy and correctness of tables, figures and appendices Presentation and description of results Ability to discuss findings in relation to literature and new insights Conclusion follows logically from arguments developed in paper Level of language use, citations and references Publication level of thesis Writing process Level of independence Contribution of supervisor Processing of feedback Completion time of thesis Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

  50. Research internships Exploring possibilities What topic do I like? Think of the courses you have followed (September - December) Think of the people you already know here and pay attention to what you hear in the next weeks/ courses/ track internship meetings Look on AskPsy (new research internships are posted): www.askpsy.nl  curriculum/ internships  Talk to the researchers to get an idea  Visit your track specific internship coordinator  Visit general internship coordinator  Then talk to potential supervisor  You also need a second assessor/ supervisor  Fill out the forms (see AskPsy)     Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience
