  1. Outreach in Flandres (Belgium) Rita van Peteghem (HST 1999+2000) Wim Peeters (HST 2000-2001)

  2. Introduction • Belgium is a Federal state, in which the communities have control on educational items, hence « Flanders » • Particle physics is NOT on curriculae now, so some PR is absolutely necessary Wim Peeters HST 2001

  3. We did different things: • Texts in regional periodics:schools • Texts in national periodics: teachers association, science periodic N&T • Attend congresses • Organise teacher trainings Wim Peeters HST 2001

  4. Most important now is the teachers training • Two afternoons: one we did, the other was a lecture on particle physics by professor Icke (Neth) • The afternoon: • 3h • multimedia • presents Wim Peeters HST 2001

  5. Background ideas • Teachers are in principle not very interested in changing their lessons • There is no time • Facilities are mostly restricted • They are fundamentally interested, else they would not be there • Operation « charm & catch » Wim Peeters HST 2001

  6. What did we do? • List of all material we had • Close look at the curriculum and analyse what when could be inserted • Systematically go through the curriculum and show briefly every item we could offer to them • Give them everything we had Wim Peeters HST 2001

  7. What did we give them? • Syllabus • Series of 50 slides on CERN • 2 videos with 7 translated films: • Powers of 10 • Lessons from Nikhef • LHC • ... Wim Peeters HST 2001

  8. They went home with loads of materials • A CD with all teaching materials we could get from last year’s HST • transparancies, Powerpoint presentations, texts, photo’s,lists of websites,..... • The Dutch cartoon book on elemetary particles • Folders from CERN • Posters Wim Peeters HST 2001

  9. What else? • There was a shop where they could get additional things • We organized an e-mail newsgroup to stay in touch with each other Wim Peeters HST 2001

  10. Spies of other universities • ...contacted us afterwards to do the same thing at the 3 other universities, so we cover ALL universities in Flanders • We were asked to organize a working group during the biggest meeting of science teachers of Flanders. Wim Peeters HST 2001

  11. What did we learn from evaluation forms? • Showing that we knew the difficulties, but that there are opportunities was a good idea • The curriculum based chronologic was new • The short drops of knowledge we offered hands-on Wim Peeters HST 2001

  12. the different forms of multimedia (slides, video, PowerPoint, transparancies,...) so that everybody got something usable • The lecture the second afternoon to give more background was also highly appreciated. Wim Peeters HST 2001
