I believe he learned that he should not be mean. He kept doing things to people that made them end up not being his friend. In the end, he ended up a miserable old man.

He informed Antsy that he preferred to live alone. Over time through “community service”, he begins to see Antsy as a friend. He begins to pay Antsy to kidnap him once a month to try new adventures. Antsy helped Mr. Crawley see that it is okay to trust others.
